Gas mask?? What's a good model and how much should I pay?
« on: October 15, 2011, 08:37:26 AM »
So, I've been researching gas masks a lil but have no personal experience with them and I was thinking about picking up a few. Does anybody have any info/opinions on the what the best model/brand is and how much I should spend on them?? Any info would be greatly appreciated!!  :shaka:

It really depends on the level of flatulence that you're trying to protect yourself from.

Are they rotten egg farts?

Dead rat farts?

Or burn your nose hairs and fry your nasal passage farts?
Your number one Option for Personal Security is a lifelong commitment to avoidance, deterrence, and de-escalation.

Someday someone may kill you with your own gun, but they should have to beat you to death with it because it is empty.

The MSA advantage seemed to come recommended pretty well. It's about 150-300 bucks for a new one. Don't forget, at a minimum, you need a 40mm filter mount.
I was actually just looking into this a few days ago after I saw some crowds get pepper sprayed. Thought I might get one ;p.

Although they are commonly called "gas masks" they are technically called a chemical protective mask or air purifying respirator. You can get them from a variety of sources, including surplus dealers. Many of the common online "stores" carry them.

The better masks are made by 3M and MSA, but there are several others.

The main concern is that the masks fit well...for work-related needs, individuals need to be "fit-tested" to ensure there are no leaks around the seals. The fit-testing involves the use of an agent that is introduced into a closed system (a hood or room) and the testee is required to perform a number of activities that are supposed to simulate expected activities  you'd perform while wearing the mask. These include jogging in place, moving your head in two axises, speaking, etc.

Depending on medical conditions, you may need a pulmonary function test before the fit-testing, as the use of the mask does increase the effort required to breathe.

Huh, this reminds me, I really hope nothing happens during the APEC conference.  Politics aside, it wouldn't be well for our community if bad stuff stirred up.  Normally I wouldn't be concerned, but with the Occupy Wall Street movement spreading across the globe my spidey senses are tingling... either that or it's the diabetes and my fingers and toes are tingling.

Or the protests and incidents could be very beneficial.  Things have to change one way or another, spending the 10-15 million on palm trees and other stuff was not the answer.
If I know you are not going to do anything about it -- I can do whatever I want.  (This is the mentality of the Hawaii government). I have seen, experienced, and been subjected to it for almost seven years.

Knowing our government though, they'll pay lip service if stuff goes bad...but protesting won't get things changed.

Shhh, your not supposed to question it. The cameras are supposed to make you feel safer. Here's some kool-aid...

Thanks Funtimes :shaka:  I checked out the MSA and is a pretty solid mask. I'm actually looking at getting that one or the FR-7800B respirator made by 3M, which came highly recommended and also had some good reviews.

Thanks HiCarry, you definitely had a good point in regards to the fitment.....without proper fitting the mask is virtually worthless. Good links too!!
