Why do they need semi-auto firearms?

http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/30728313/lawmakers-critique-state-plan-to-arm-conservation-officers-with-semi-automatic-rifles

"Could you please explain why your officers would need semi-automatic weapons? I know the job of law enforcement can be dangerous. However, I am not aware of situations in the past where DLNR officers were outgunned or in need of more fire power," state Sen. Will Espero wrote in an email to Land Board Chairwoman Suzanne Case.
In an email to Hawaii News Now, state Rep. Kaniela Ing said that DOCARE's main mission "is to stop overfishing, and they already carry hand guns."
He added, "We need to ask what are they planning on using them on? Police militarization in violent urban cores is one thing, but this proposal stands against Hawaii's culture of peace and aloha."

I think any LEO has to ENFORCE a culture of law.

So how should they approach violators and criminals?
"Excuse me brah, try put da feesh bak in da watah"
"Eh brah, no punch me in da face lidat"

Why do Hawii LEO need firearms in the first place. Hawaii citizen are not allowed to carry guns.

London Police are prohibited from carrying firearms , and are only issued bully clubs.

That's a good point to bring up in the next town hall meeting

I dont think that will go good with the guys pushing ccw. Politicians next answer is, "If the police dont need guns then why does the public?" Unless you were being sarcastic

"...not aware of situations in the past..."...so the Senator wants a few DOCARE officers to be killed while on patrol before he'll approve funding?

And since when did "semi-automatic" weapons become "overpowered"...let's issue black powder muskets instead :)

That's exactly what they should get: single shot rifles and single shot shotguns.

You can get a Mossberg 500 for under $400 on a good day, and an AR for as little as $650.

10 ARs at $650 is $6500,

10 Mossbergs at $500 is 5,000,

7 magazines per rifle x 10 rifles at $16/mag = $1120

210 5.56 rounds for shift carry (standard military combat load) x 10 rifles @ .35/round = $700

50 buck shot or slug shells for shift carry X 10 shot guns @ $1 per shell = $500

1000 5.56 for training (far more than most military units get per service member) x 10 rifles @ .35 cents/round = $3500

500 buck shot or slug shells for training x 10 shotguns @ $1/shell  = $5000

6500
5000
1120
  700
  500
3500
5000
-------------
$22,320

So using average market value, DLNR should be able to fund what they need for less than $25,000. Keep in mind that this does not include govermental discounts that most manufacturers provide to government agencies and/or state governments, which could easily drop that total below $20,000, and that is being extremely conservative.

Tell me again why the DLNR needs almost $60,000 or 3x the amount of money to get what they need?

The news also keeps saying "assault rifles". When it clearly states that they were requesting funds for semi-automatic rifles.  WTF?
