Reloading at Koko Head

Is reloading at Koko Head allowed? I have never seen anyone do it but it seems load development would be much more efficient. I have a hand press and could bring prepped and primed brass. Thoughts?

One of our members reloads at the range. Sometimes he reloads every round he shoots that day at the range. I know the RSO's know he is doing it so I assume it is perfectly okay.

There is nothing in the rules that I know of preventing one from doing this.

I've seen people do reloading as they shot on the rifle side.  Never seen it anywhere else.

Thanks. I was thinking that shooting under the same conditions without me having to make several trips to work up one particular load might help. I was concerned about the wind affecting my digital scale and more so the distraction from the onlookers wanting to talk story.

Wind will probably be an issue with the scale unless you make some kind of wind block.  tried before...

What I ended up doing was measuring and labeling at home and barely seat bullet onto the case.  My hand press had just the seater die on it.  That way I could just seat each individual round for test.  If the charge was no good I could pull the bullet off and reclaim the powder without much trouble.

I went today and it was a zoo. Full house. There's no way I could weigh my charges. The guy on the next bench was shooting a large caliber with a big brake. It was bad enough it was blowing the empty cardboard boxes. My scale would not like that at. Lol

I may give your idea a try Heavies. Thanks

About to do a LD for my 5.56, using that method.   Hope to see you there one day! :shaka:

I was at Kokohead on Sunday with my Black Powder Rifles and pistols. When one loads one round at a time ramming home a lead ball after powder and patch, does this count as reloading?

Let's face it. Black Powder is considered much more dangerous a substance than smokeless powder.

Personally I'd work up sets of 5 at different charge levels (so 5 rounds with 30 grains, 5 rounds with 32 grains, 5 rounds with 34 grains, etc.), setback lengths, etc.  To try and fuss with the recipes at the range and do all of that could lead to some mistakes/other issues.

I do something similar now. I load 5 in .5gr increments. When I find where it likes, I load 5 at plus/minus .1 increments. Problem is I spend several trips to work up a particular bullet/ powder combo and every trip is under different condition. Then there's COAL work ups. As well I can't always  shoot every week. Just trying to see I can be more efficient.

Have you ever tried OCW by Dan Newberry?  You can find a load in much less time and use less components.

I did look into that from someone's referral. Might have been yours. I kind of do believe in that. To me It's kind of like how Federal Gold Medal Match can do so well in so many platforms.

On the other hand I'm a hot rodder from years back. I've always got to tinker and maximize what I have. To me it's part of the fun, and sometimes frustrations, of reloading.

Bushido,

You are always welcome to come shoot with us. BTW, we don't always shoot black powder every week. Well, one of our members that is all he shoots.

I've met Inspector and he's helped tremendously. I've ran into a couple of his bunch as recent as this past weekend. I will say all good guys.

I will definitely hit you up if I go during your timeframe. I usually go about 10ish after the morning rush though. We will definitely shoot together sooner than later
