NRA courses: what, when, where
« on: January 10, 2016, 08:03:58 AM »
New handgun owner and new NRA member here.

Interested in taking NRA Training courses. Most interested in the following, for starters:
  • NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course
  • NRA Basic Rifle Shooting Course
  • NRA Defensive Pistol Course

I searched for courses at NRA.org but didn't find much. I think Hawaii instructors aren't listing their course offerings there, instead choosing to advertise on 2ahawaii or through word-of-mouth.

If I discover I have a propensity for learning and teaching, I may pursue the NRA Instructor courses and/or Range Safety Officer later on.

Questions:
1. Who offers NRA courses and where can I find the course schedule?
2. If you've ever taken an NRA course, who was your instructor and would you recommend him/her?

Any advice would be helpful.

BEST course on the island with a myriad of instructors with military, LEO, hunting and general gun aficionados.

CORRECTION !!!!!
I naturally thought Mac had referred you to L.I.F.E. (Lessons in Firearms Education) w/o fully reading the link provided as L.I.F.E  would be my referral as well.
Cliff is a great supporter of L.I.F.E. HRA and I'm sure he handles a fine class.

Thanks for the p/u Mac.

Thank you for the referrals to S.A.F.E. and LIFE.
I've contacted both to learn about their class schedules.

I recommend taking the class as soon as possible.  The NRA is expected to start charging more for the class in the next month or so.

The NRA does not set course prices. That is left to the sole discretion of the instructor. Material costs may be increased but that is something instructors should be factoring into their overall course costs and adjust as necessary to meet their individual "margins."

The NRA is changing the curriculum in the next couple of months for the basic pistol course.  Students will be required to register with the NRA and take a 3 hour online course which costs $50.  Then they will have an classroom portion with the instructor, and a live fire.  Either the instructor has to reduce "their" course cost by $50, or force the student to pay the additional $50 to the NRA.
