It's it possible to resize 7.62x51 brass into 7.62x39?

Id like to eventually get into reloading this caliber.

I would just buy 762x39 brass. It's way too much trouble for me to even try to convert 762x51 brass.

I don't know if it is possible or not, I have not Googled it. While I am a big fan of re-purposing and special projects like this I suspect that it would be much easier and cheaper to just buy the brass you want. You will probably need to cut or trim each case before/after sizing (assuming you could size it). It seems like a lot of work for such a common casing. For me, sometimes just pulling out my wallet is cheaper/easier than going through the trouble. Now if the casing was a hard to find and weirder than snot casing then I would jump on this one.

Another suggestion might be to Google Berdan primed brass conversion to boxer primed. I think I remember reading something about this recently. Plus there are people out there that came up with a procedure that is quick and easy to just remove Berdan primers. I'll bet there is a ton of Berdan primed brass thrown away every week at the range. Also, there are people out there reloading the steel cases. And I think Speedtek was even reloading the steel cases if my memory is correct.

You might consider placing an ad here looking to buy the brass. You might be surprised at the responses.

Unless of course you are wanting to put in the time and making a special project out of it, you may just want to buy once fired boxer primed brass.

Id guess that there would be a lot of chopping of excess brass.

This is exactly my point. It might not sound like a lot of work to you but to me it is a lot of work and trouble. The brass can be found in once fired and new. As you stated (and I didn't realize) it is not all that common. But I did find multiple sources for it. And it is a little on the expensive side considering how popular it is. Still, unless you are planning to make like just a hundred pieces it might be worth the experience to just do it if it can be done. But if you want let's say 500 or 1,000 pieces I would just suggest buying the brass. JMHO 

I have reloaded 762x39 with good results, but I have not done a conversion like this before.
So this is just what I see.

1- these use different shell holders- so that's a big red flag there
2- the web (bottom part) of the 308 is way bigger by about 20 thou
3- by the time you chop the neck off the 308 and squeeze it down to take a .311 bullet I think the neck of the brass will be way too thick.
yeah that's right, I said 311 bullet not 308, because that's what it is.
I think the necks would need to be turned, like how benchrest guys do.

Just go and buy brass

You could buy a sh*t load of brass for the price of that forming die set.  Save the time and headaches.

Does your rifle beat up brass? I had a Sig556 that has a similar action as the AK with fixed blade ejector and it would put such deep gashes in the case head that they wouldn't fit in a shell holder after a couple of firings.

Not sure yet. Just picked up a WASR, and will hopefully be picking up a definitive arms 4150 when they are back in stock.
