Wow.... you don't get off for reasons of insanity and then get released into the public.

I am trying to give the court the benefit of the doubt but I cannot imagine what could possibly justify such an excuse. Maybe if he had some brain tumor that made him crazy but it was removed and he's now normal, but thats not the case as far as I understand it.

insanity isn't something that miraculously goes away; especially when it comes to acts of violence.

just more proof that the state is implementing the 'we don't have enough room / money' approach.

I'd be interested to know if HPD would issue the victim a CCW permit. Or would they say No because the accused was Not Guilty.

That's a good point.

Too bad the victim doesn't live on O'ahu anymore.

Two people were stabbed that day.  The other one is a friend of mine who was visiting from CA and still lives and works there.  He was the first one stabbed and ran down the trail to warn people coming up.  He was sitting on a rock talking to his wife on his cell phone and hear a noise behind him. He turned and saw the crazy with a knife and he stood up and ran and didn't even know he was stabbed until the people he met down the trail told him he was bleeding badly.  I guess you go numb when fear and adrenaline kicks in.  My advice to him was the next time you go hiking, at least carry a walking stick so you have something to defend yourself with besides a cell phone and a bottle of water.  But as a sheeple, he doesn't think of those things.
BTW, regarding the photographer attacked by 3 dogs at Makapuu recently.  The advice of the Hawaiian Humane Society is if you see a dog attack in progress, call 911 for the quickest response. LOL.  If any 3 of my 4 Rottweilers decided to attack a person, they would be on life support within a minute.  Thankfully they instantly stop being aggressive the second I yell NO!
Happily living in Puna

This state's judicial system is unbelievable!  I wonder how hard it would be to press the state to change the law to have a "guilty but insane" verdict.  He gets treated at the state hospital, then, if he gets "better", his ass gets sent straight to prison to serve the remainder of his sentence.  That makes much more sense to me.  None of this slap on the wrist stuff for trying to kill someone.
