Pretty good vid on why light varmint ammo isn't a good idea for your self defense AR.

Some graphic images here so be warned.

The proof is in the pudding.

Big bullets beat little bullets, no matter how fast they're going.

115+115=230!  :D

So if someone were choosing a 22 mag round, bigger and slower is better than smaller and faster?

That is a loaded question!

Seriously though there is not enough of a weight difference in my opinion between a 30 gr and a 50 gr bullet shot from a .22 WMR. Now if you want to compare a 115 gr 9mm to a 250 gr .45 I would probably consider the .45. Except for the fact that there are now high performance bullets designed to expand and create as much tissue damage as possible. In this case I would take a reliable 9mm high tech bullet any day of the week. Just like if all I could have was a .22 WMR I would choose a round like the Hornady Critical Defense designed as a self defense round to create as much tissue damage as possible. This round is 45 gr and hits 1,500 - 1,700 fps and designed to expand as much as it can.

To sum this up the high tech expansion bullets overcome the old big and slow advantage over the faster and lighter bullets that used to exist. Which is one reason why the FBI and a lot of police forces are trading in their .40 's for 9mm's.

Do any of the videos take into consideration over penetration for a home self defense shooting?
Sorry haven't watched the video yet

The first video explains that 5.56 has same overpenetration potential as .40 cal

Watch the last minute of the first video.

The guy says if you are using varmint rounds because you are worried about over penetration, then don't use pistol ammo in your house.  Also, if multiple torso hits don't stop the threat quickly enough, go for the head.

The way I look at it if the bullet passes through the target all that energy is wasted if it doesnt hit a vital organ.

I personally don't plan to change the 55 gr JHP ammo in my AR15 for home defense.  Like mauidog pointed out if multiple torso shots don't work, go for the head.  Remember that cop in Waipahu that got shot 7 times with an AK47 and still managed to take out the bad guy with his 9mm handgun?  Maybe Joe Biden is right, get a double barrel shotgun, although I would get a KSG if I decided to use a shotgun for my home defense gun.

You fell victim to one of the classic blunders. The most famous of which is: "never get into a land war in Asia" but only slightly less well known is this: never go into a fight with a Kel-Tec when death is on the line.

Nah, no worries there.  I currently don't own a shotgun and don't plan on buying one.  I rather spend money on high quality handguns.

Interesting topic. I respect the theory but Ill stick to the theory of "shot placement" Two in the thoracic cavity and if theres a failure to stop than post your front sight on the bad guys cranial ocular cavity and presssssss..........  As my frontsight instructors once said.   :shaka:
The only ism that has not failed me yet is skepticism.....
