Ask Legislative Committee Chairpersons to Hear SB95 ("Shall Issue CCW") (Read 3705 times)

punaperson

Greetings All! Hope the New Year is going well. The Hawaii state legislature convened Wednesday, January 20. The first step for any bill to become law is to be heard in committee. If granted a hearing it can be voted upon, and if passed out of committee, will move on for further consideration and amendment. The (“shall issue”) CCW bill currently assigned to committees, SB95, has been sent to three committees. From past discussions with legislators, whether or not a bill is given a hearing is at the discretion of the individual committee chairperson. If that person opposes the bill, it likely won't get heard, much less voted upon.

Below I've listed the three committees, and all their members email addresses, that have the option to hear SB95. THE FIRST NAME LISTED UNDER EACH COMMITTEE IS THE CHAIRPERSON. If we all (and all our friends and neighbors, etc.) ask them to hear SB95, perhaps a miracle will happen and they will actually allow consideration of the bill (not that it would necessarily pass a committee vote). In the past the committees have refused to even hear SB95 (or similar CCW bills). This is where we are in Hawaii. We law-abiding citizens are all denied a fundamental enumerated right to bear arms guaranteed by the constitutions (both the Hawaii state constitution and the United States Constitution have the exact same wording: The Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution is repeated verbatim in the Hawaii state constitution) these legislators swore to uphold, and they won't even hear the bill. At least we can let them know we know what they are doing, and ask them to consider our rights.

Good to see that the very anti gun Roz Baker is not chair of any of these committees and sits on only one of them.  She is originally from Texas too, a very gun friendly state.
Happily living in Puna

Whenever a bill is given to more than two committees,  it's done with the intent that the bill will never be heard in time to make it to the floor.

For anyone unsure about who represents their district, this site has it all.

First, try the button on the right:  Locate

If that doesn't work, type your full address, City and State in the Search Box.  Usually just city and state works.

Actually, while assigning a bill to two committees can be used as a stalling tactic, it is often for other reasons and does not necessarily mean that it won't pass. Undoubtedly it makes it more difficult due to the time and testimony required to see it through both committees, but not impossible. That being said, if a bill is ever assigned to three committees it will almost certainly fail.
