AT&T vs. Verizon Service?
« on: January 26, 2016, 07:45:09 PM »
So I'm looking to get some recommendations.  I've been with AT&T since the Cingular days, but as time has gone on I've found their service and cell coverage to be lacking.  Our family plan is almost at the end of its 24mo mark and I'm strongly considering moving the whole family over to Verizon.

For those guys with Verizon (or any other service really) how are you liking (or not liking) your cell coverage/service here on Oahu?  I work in town and but live out over by the Stadium if those locations mean anything for coverage.

Thanks in advance! ???

I live just above the stadium and really like Verizon.
Verizon also had a great family plan when we signed up.

I also find more consistent coverage on the outer islands.

Used to have AT&T but that was a few years ago.

Been w/Verizon forever.  Great service & coverage but were never the cheapest.  I've heard their pricing has become a bit more competitive.

My bill with verizon is stupid expensive, but worth it.  Never dont have coverage, even when i worked on a tour boat out at sea was good.  Plus get a lot of 2a guys locally at verizon.

I moved from Sprint to Verizon about a year ago. Have been very happy with Verizon speed and coverage.
Sprint is THE WORST CARRIER EVER! Abysmally slow.

Same as everyone here so far. I switched from AT&T to Verizon due to their lack of customer service. Also, they have better coverage. I travel all over this island and to the Big Island and the best coverage is Verizon by far on both islands. But you pay for it.  :worship:

I've had AT&T since going to the iPhone (whenever the 3GS came out) and still on the unlimited data.  I get a discount on AT&T through work and the coverage is pretty good.  For a while, the signal was weak around certain parts of Halawa/Aiea, but they seem to have corrected that.  I've had good coverage wherever I've travelled.  I'll probably stick with AT&T for the time being as long as I can keep the unlimited data.

My buddy had Sprint and he hated it.  He and his wife have since switched to Verizon and seems like he's satisfied.

If you don't have this, AT&T Mark the Spot by AT&T Services, Inc.

My decision to switch to Verizon was based heavily on RootMetrics report.
Here's a link to the report for Honolulu: http://www.rootmetrics.com/us/rsr/honolulu-hi/2015/2H

Went from Sprint to T-Mobile and it was an improvement.  Also had an AT&T phone when I had T-Mobile.  Then went strictly to Verizon.  By far the best coverage / reception, especially on the Big Island.  On the BI, there are many places that I will still get Verizon and nothing else.

Switched from sprint 3 years ago, when Nextel was bought out by Sprint service and coverage went in the toilet.

Just recently switched my plan to their "Big" plan, $140 a month for 3 lines and 6 gigs of shared data, unlimited everything else.

Coverage and speed rocks, service is great. The guys at work with ATT don't get signal some places in the hotel and I have no problems.

Highly recommend.

Verizon coverage, data speed, and service is tops. But that goes along with a hefty price. I had Sprint and Tmobile earlier on with nothing but frustration with spotty coverage. Im glad i got on the unlimited data plan at Verizon back then and kept it!

Agree to avoid Sprint at all costs.  I was about two miles from home and could not make a call to my house.  Just would not go through.  Makes great sense to have a cell phone you cannot call two miles away from downtown Kona, eh?

Everyone, thanks so much for the replies!  You know you always see the "coverage" maps online and on TV, but you really don't know how it is out in the wild.  I think I'm going to end my relationship with AT&T and jump over to big red, good to hear everyone is having good luck with the service. Thanks! :shaka:

I have always wondered about those maps.

There is more to making a call (or do whatever you smartphone guys do)  than signal strength.  When i could not make a call, I turned off the phone and back on, showed plenty of signal strength, just would not make a damn call.  That is a pure technical failure that should never happen unless circuits are overloaded, not likely on a weekday morning before 0900.on the Big island.  Sprint sucks.

if you are having bad reception at home or work...some carriers give you a femto cell that connects to your internet connection. I had a SPrint Airave but didn't need it when I got a phone that does WiFi calling.

I had ATT for over 10 years and changed to Verizon 8 months ago.  There coverage is no better than ATT and you cannot be on call and the Internet at the same time.  My wife stayed with ATT and I am waiting for the next promotion to go back to ATT.

had verizon for almost 15 years

you will pretty much never have a dropped call, signal is decent everywhere, 4g coverage also decent everywhere, only times i didnt have signal was at the top of a mountain hike or if I was couple miles out on a boat.

Verizon has a cool caveat that some of you Verizon customers may not know, Verizon customers get free NFL Mobile through the NFL MOBILE App, this allows you to watch certain games live, whatever game is showing live on TV, only thing it costs is data.
If you stay ready, you don't have to get ready.
