"these bullets have an incendiary device, it's a heat seeker. you could cook the deer while you shot it." in reference to .50 BMG
    If that were true, there'd be a run on hunting rifles in .50 BMG!  >:D

I was watching this hunting show and the guy ended up using his 338 Lapua to shoot a deer/elk.

I was helping my buddy by minding the gun shop while he was out to get some lunch.  A customer walked in and asked me a question with a serious look on his face.  He said, “What caliber is a 9mm Glock 17?”
There was another time when we had a possible meth user who came into the shop and presented us with a used firearm he wanted to sell/consignment.  We asked him if it was his.  He boasted by saying it was acquired from his neighbors house.  Little did he know that one of our other patrons, who was a local police officer, was standing next to him in front of the counter. Our local LE politely told him that they received a call about a robbery in the area were one of the stolen items was an chromed STI 2011 with a personal SN.  Funny thing is, the pistol he was trying to sell was a chromed STI with the exact same SN.
Good Times!

Interesting story.

Are you sure your not going to edit your post blank later and simply fill the blank with just a ( :shaka: )  like most of your posts?

Dang I guess you really pay attention to the post.  Just for you I'll add the shakka in couple of days. Are your offeneded?  I guess we have another thin skinned troll with an attitude.  Or better yet why don't you ask for my IP to be cancelled. LOL! :shaka:

What was the range?

The guy (show host) said I got this cool rifle, never really shot it.  It's supposed to be really accurate.  I'm going to sight it in.  Hand sized rock at 500 yds with his (show) guest as the spotter.

One shot hits the rock with snow on the ground.  Spotter says wow really cool, you could actually see the (vapor trail............they are hunters not long range competition guys).

Anyhow shooting the animal............maybe 200 - 300 yards?  I think they first made the thing at less than 400 yds and the sight in meant he could have shot it right there.

Bump firing, AKA "red neck ballistic masturbation."
Bump firing is the pinnacle of skill / magical technique that every ignorant, bubba type gun owner strives to attain.
Just youtube "bump fire" and get ready for all kinds of stupid.
I'm all for shooting just to have fun. But, shooting from the hip with 1 had in control of the rifle, spraying rounds into the dirt and air, simply to make noise while one's douche bag friends look on is, IMO, stupid and dumb.
YMMV

And for good measure, I'll jump on the bandwagon and throw one of these in! :shaka:

Haha, that's pretty damn close for that rifle!  Of course, there's no range that's too close for a given caliber, if your 338 Lapua is good at 1,000; it's good at a couple hundred, too.

Ok, my turn... how about: "so, if I move to Colorado, I can just go buy a gun?"

I absolutely am not lying, a guy asked me this at work about 6am this morning. He moved his wife and kids already, none of them have spent any time off Oahu. This guy is baffled that he can just go buy a gun, get a permit to, gasp, carry it on his person, and go to national forest to shoot...

This state obviously has been in regime-land for a looooooong time.

I offer some new absolute stupidest questions:

You can seriously just go off into the forest and shoot?

Can non-residents just go buy a gun in Colorado?

Does the square root of amphibians = bicycle?

"You can seriously just go off into the forest and shoot?"

Yes, with certain restrictions, notably regarding housing density. The forests are "multi-use," and some private property areas are included.  Also, the forest rangers can close off an area for other reasons, such as when it becomes known as an informal shooting area and gun slobs bring up things like TV sets to shoot at and then don't pack their junk out with them.  These places become littered with broken glass, abandoned cars, old paper targets, etc.  There are also restrictions with respect to proximity to highways and the like. But basically, yes, you can just go out in the forest and shoot.

When I lived in the city of Boulder CO I used to be able to load up five test rounds, drive five minutes up Boulder Canyon into the Roosevelt National Forest, and test the loads.  Then I'd drive back home, load up five more with a different powder charge, and drive back up the canyon to test those out. Rinse and repeat.

That particular area was closed because there was a 36" high-pressure domestic water line serving the city of Boulder runnng through it nearby and some schmuck shot holes in it.  Prick.  Ruined it for everyone else.

"Can non-residents just go buy a gun in Colorado?"

No.  With retail transactions, you have to show residency --as is, I believe, asked on the 4473 form.  Takes three months' worth of rent receipts, utility bills, etc, and/or a Colorado ID or DL to prove up on residency to vote, last I heard.  That's the "Motor Voter" loophole, where you don't even have to prove citizenship to vote.  Far more dangerous than the gun show loophole, in my opinion (see below.)

Privately, I'm not sure. I think there's something about having "reason to believe" or "knowing or should have known" the person is a non-resident or prohibited person, but basically, private transactions between eligible persons is not subject to review by the awe-thaur-it-ays.  This is the so-called "gun show loophole" you hear about, because private dealers can set up a table and sell privately at gun shows without going through the NICS process.  Or they can wander around the parking lot with a gun for sale, last I heard.  I don't go to any gun shows anymore, anyhow.

I'm admittedly kind of muddy on those aspects of private transactions since I never sell guns.

90% (new lie is 70%) of guns recovered at crime scenes in Mexico are traced back to the United States.  As posted by astroboy in a different thread, the actual number is 8%.
