Last night a boy was shot while he was riding in his car with his parents. This is a sad, seemingly random, act of violence.
I wonder if we'll find out more details and if the criminals will be caught. It looks like there are traffic cams right in that area, maybe one of them caught footage.

A person in a car shot at another vehicle in Liliha last night, wounding a teenage boy inside in what police said appeared to be an unprovoked attack.

The boy, 13, was wounded in an arm and was taken to The Queen's Medical Center. Police said his wound was not life-threatening.

Police were looking for a white Toyota that may have turned makai onto Liliha Street following the shooting.

The boy's parents told police they were riding in their Ford Explorer west on Vineyard Boulevard with their son and two daughters. About 9:30 p.m., they were at a stop light at Liliha Street. A car was in the lane to their left. When the light turned green, they heard a pop and saw that the SUV's left rear window had shattered.

The boy told his parents he had been injured. They pulled over just west of the Liliha Street intersection.

The parents told police they were not aware of anything that would have provoked someone to shoot at them.

While I hope that the shooter is caught and feel bad that an apparently innocent person was injured, I cannot help but think what would have happened if the shooter had stuck around and kept shooting. I think this, if the circumstances are as they appear, is a clear example of why we need to go to a "shall issue" concealed carry law. Even under the best of circumstances it would be almost impossible for the police to respond in time to catch, let alone prevent, a more dedicated shooter. That being the case, I find it incredible that otherwise law abiding citizens are denied the ability to protect themselves and their family from sociopaths such as the person that shot at this family.

I know, I'm preaching to the choir....

I bet they're going to blame it again on guns.  I hope that people start waking up and see the truth that self defense is a natural right.  My prayers for the family.
