Beer guy here.  I like a wide variety, but I more so like red ale, brown ale, stout or dark beers.  I also like lagers and a nice ice cold lager out of a frozen peach jar is a great thing on a hot day.

Any beer with alcohol in it.

For a while now I've been drinking rolling rock.  Usually find it on sale for around $20-$25 for a 30 pack cans.  Can't beat that!

Love that stuff, but I only buy it for dessert after finishing off pizza at the Kona Brew Pub here in Kona.  Outstanding after dinner beer, for me a bit too heavy to have with food.

They have a Black Sand Porter that is really good too.  Had them in a bottle, not nearly as good as on tap.

Have a Longboard with the pizza!

I've noticed that a number of local bars have house reds.  I think Stats has a Stats Red on tap and I recall another bar had that as well.  The Stats red was pretty good.

I was wondering if that's a trend/thing nowadays for bars to have their own reds, or any other style of beer for that matter.

I haven't had RR in a while.  One of my former coworkers would always get RR.

I generally hate beer but have been exploring hard apple ciders as of recent.

Generally the only beer I like is rooter, but there has been a recent increase in rooter flavored beers. They are actual brewed beers but done with the flavors that go into rootbeer. Some are just sweet like cheap rootbeer but some are actually very complex with notes of honey, vanilla, licorice, etc.
I have tried a few brands. Not your fathers rootbeer was good. Coney Island was ok, just more sweet and simple like soda, but the best was Mission Hard Rootbeer. It was not as sweet with a lot more complex flavors that didn't just taste like an artificial syrup added. It was also the most pricey. All of them are over 5% alcohol (Mission was about 7%) and all of them you barely noticed the alcohol.

Actually there is another form of beer that I do like. It is an old european style fruit beer called lambic. The hops are aged I believe which somehow takes away that bitter flavor common to most beers. It doesn't take much like a traditional beer at all but by definition it is a beer. It is good but a little too pricey for normal consumption.

I used to look forward to the Sam Adams holiday 12pk. It had my fav. Old Fezzywigs Ale. Sam Adams recently reduced the number of Old Fezzy bottles in the case to just 2. They noted the change in very small print.
I no longer buy any SA beer. My current fav is the the kona brewing co. island hopper variety 12pk. Variety is the spice of life.

Any suggestions on a good brown ale?  Samuel Smith is the only good one I know of.

I just tried that 'Not Your Father's Rootbeer' brand; tastes like shoyu mixed with alcohol and rootbeer.

I'll stick with rum

Not normally my thing, but when I was out with the gf last week, a product promoter friend gave us a sample of Henry's orange and ginger ale hard soda. The ginger ale one was actually pretty good. The orange was ok, but kinda sweet for me.

Tried the orange one too.

Pour it out within 30 seconds of the first sip, and gave the rest of the 6 pack to my neighbor.

The best hard rootbeer I have found was Mission brand. It isn't quite as sweet and it has a lot more complex flavors. More of that earthy spiciness that good rootbeer has. A bit pricier though.

The ginger hard soda was pretty good. You could really taste the ginger.

Outside of homebrew, the most commonly found in stores and bars in Hawaii is Newcastle and I do drink it.  Other good brown ales that I like, no particular order,
Petes Wicked
Old Brown Dog
Ellies
Indian Brown
