Shotgun slugs and cylinder bores
« on: March 03, 2016, 06:31:23 PM »
What kind of damage, if any, will a 1oz 12 gauge slug do to a cylinder bore? Got some slugs but no rifled shotgun barrel. Do I even need a rifled barrel to enjoy these rounds? Can I safely shoot these out of a normal 18" cylinder bore barrel? Thanks in advance...

A slug shouldn't do any damage to a cylinder bore shotgun.
Unless it's a sabot, it was designed for a smooth bore barrel with a minimum choke.
I shoot them all the time at kokohead and haven't noticed any damage.

Maybe inspector, Oldfart or Q can chime in as they more knowledgable than me.

What does the ammo box say?  Use sabotage slugs in rifled barrels, and rifled slugs in smooth bore barrels.  Never use bird or buckshot in a rifled barrel.

Don't worry about it, fire away. Standard slugs were meant to be fired through a smoothbore, a rifled barrel just gives you better accuracy.

The only thing you might have to think about is lead fouling, but only after many rounds. Have fun!

"Cylinder bore" actually means "no choke."
The difference between theory and reality is that, in theory, there is no difference between theory and reality.

Yup.  Just thought of something else, make sure your shells are compatible with your gun's chamber size.  I wouldn't try stuffing a 3 or 31/2" shell into a 2 3/4" chamber you could end up with one less hand
