Anyone know a local supplier for bullet resistant materials?
« on: March 14, 2016, 03:28:14 PM »
Looking for a local supplier who carries hard bullet resistant material. Not like soft body armor but hard sheet/panels.

Thanks

What are you trying to stop, pistol, rifle calibers of each? What are you trying to armor, size, permanent, temporary, movable or fixed? Your initial query is very vague.

5.56 at a minimum would be nice. It is going to depend on what the supplier has and how much it weighs. I am planning to make a ballistic shield, the type you can carry around. Thus steel is not practical. The fiberglass stuff is heavy too but not as bad.

What are th shields swat uses made from?  I would think a shield would be heavy.  Carrying plates in a vest is heavy enough, but at least your hands are free. What is the main purpose of the shield?

EEF I doubt you could do it cheap and I doubt you could do it easily. To get rifle protection you'd need an over abundance of soft armor or a hard armor of some type. I'd look for a commercial off the shelf product vs. DIY. I searched bullet proof shield and got an interesting assortment of returns.

What type of 5.56 do you wish to stop?  What is your budget?

I have often wondered what happened to all the "bullet bouncers" we wore in SVN.  Heavy as hell, front and back form fitting plates with velcro to tie together.  Doubt they still use that stuff today.

Were said to be able to stop the 12.7mm stuff.  Not bad just standing behind a gun, but you would not want to move around fast much wearing them.

here you go. :shaka:

https://www.botach.com/hardwire/

i no longer support them for their awful customer service and general business practices, but if they actually have it in stock(their live inventory means nothing) then you will probably get a decent deal including shipping.

on a side note, every classroom should have one of these:

Problem is that they seem to run about $1000 and up.

I am oddly frugal, I like to make things instead of buying them if possible.

Check with Prime Sports HI at the gunshow.  They supposed to be a AR500 dealer in Hawaii.   The steel plates are reasonable compared to ceramics and other exotic materials.

this is an odd project.
I think you'd be better off with plates and a carrier from companies that have the resources and know-how to make armor.
You don't want to gamble your life on something home brewed. This is one area you don't want to be frugal.

Mythbusters did an episode on bullet proofing a vehicle using telephone books. You should go look up the results.
I would go with commercial made over DIY

To stop 5.56, especially certain types of 5.56, your project will either be extremely heavy for its application or grossly expensive as a DIY.

The standard hand held shields are not usually for 5.56.
