Aloha,

It is critical that you write to your Senator.  We only have until tomorrow, but if you could send a quick email or fax or even make a phone call, it would help immensely.   The House vote was very close on SB 2954.  If the four representatives had not been absent, the bill might not have passed.  We need several hundred emails, faxes, letters, phone calls to go to the senators to oppose all four bills, as they are severely flawed and unconstitutional, if we want to try to influence the vote.  And, sadly, if even one bill passes this year, it will be a message to the anti-gun legislators to push harder next year and try for additional bad bills.  Session is almost over....we have to fight harder....we can do this, if enough gun owners get involved.

Thank you!!!!!

Kerry

On Tuesday, April 12, the Senate will vote on HB 625 (misdemeanor harrassment), HB 2629 (Rap Back), SB 2954 (Rap back), and HB 2632 (emergency hospitalization.
We need everyone to write to their Senators to kill these bills.  You can email all of the Senators with one email to:
Sens@capitol.hawaii.gov
If they don't hear from enough of us, they'll pass the bills.  Get involved NOW.  You need to contact your senator before Tuesday,  April 12.  If it goes to the Governor, our chances of killing the bills reduce significantly.

Also, please go to NRA,  https://www.nraila.org/articles/20160410/hawaii-anti-gun-bills-scheduled-for-floor-votes-next-week to send a message to your personal Legislators.

If there was ever a time for action, it is now. Over the last several weeks we have been asking that Hawaii's gun owners contact their respective legislators to help fight these bad bills. And some have responded, but if you look at the testimony submitted, it has numbered from 10-40 pieces submitted. That is pathetic.

How many people are registered on this forum alone? There is no reason we shouldn't be able to get hundreds of letters and testimony on a regular basis, but we can never seem to do that. Why?

If these measures pass you can rest assured folks like Karl Rhoades will be emboldened to submit more and more anti-gun bills next year. It's your choice....and your rights. Do something

HiC, you are correct that there are approx 3000 registered users, but there are only 1-200 that are active members
we have been actively trying to recruit new members and rally the troops, but as you know from the HRA mailing lists, it is a constant battle to get people to be active

it is a critical time, people
and we need to hit these bills HARD if we want to have any chance of stopping them

I concur in your lament, only I don't think "pathetic" is a strong enough or accurate enough word. The truth is, collectively (that includes us, unfortunately) the people of Hawaii have the government they want and vote, or don't vote, for. Pretty simple. It's a fact (unless you believe there is enough voter fraud to explain the extremely lopsided results). The only thing that I believe could possibly start to steer the ship in another direction would be a huge influx of election campaign funding from the likes of a libertarian/conservative Bloombergian-type donor(s). Pretty sure that ain't gonna happen (Hawaii is such "small potatoes", why bother?). I've spent a huge number of hours researching issues, writing and submitting (sometimes lengthy) testimony, writing, emailing, and calling senators, representatives, the governor, the AG, police departments, county councils, etc., all to, apparently, no avail. How are you going to get uninterested and/or apathetic and/or people who believe "the system is rigged and your vote or input doesn't matter" to act? Oviously whatever strategies have been tried, don't work, at least not for Second Amendment issues. That being said, I gotta go send a few more emails and make a few more phone calls to traitors who politely tell me they will consider my "thoughts on the subject", then stab me in the back.   :geekdanc:  :shaka:

Mac,

I guess that's the point. There are 200 "active members" so we should be able to get more participation than we have.

And, don't get me wrong, I am just as disappointed with the HRA members as well. It is an ongoing problem that I have seen for many years, but it seems especially prevalent here (well, on internet forums in general, not just here). You post about a new unilateral procedure that HPD implements about firearms (an entirely hypothetical statement for illustration only) here and you get dozens of folks that will make multiple posts, spending literally hours complaining about said new procedure, but then those same folks can't find time to submit testimony or call/email their legislators because they're "too busy."

The bottom line is that Hawaii's gun owners, in general are apathetic when it comes to getting involved and yet extremely vocal when it comes to complaining about things. And, until it changes, we will always be fighting from a disadvantaged position.

For those like yourself (Mac) and others that have taken the time and put forth the effort, thank you! For those that are sitting back and finding excuses for not getting involved: shame on you.

Sent testimony on all 5 bills (again). Our legislators interpret a lack of testimony from us as "we're okay with it".  It only takes a few minutes to send testimony. Let's send them a clear message that we don't want these bills.

sent to sens@capitol.hawaii.gov:

these bills place unnecesary burdens on LEGAL gun owners, and in the case of the RAP BACK bills, they violate Federal law regarding personal registration information

if you want to stop potential gun violence, efforts need to be concentrated on the mentally ill and ILLEGAL gun owners

The message received by Senators and Representatives is that gun owners don't have a problem with their rights being reduced.  With the thousands of gun owners in the state, only a few submitted testimony or contacted their legislators in opposition to these bills.  Less than 100 testimonies opposing each bill was submitted, that's less than 1% of all gun owners in Hawaii.  If gun owners continue to be apathetic in a State with some of the most restrictive gun laws, expect to see more of your rights being taken away.

HB 625 - Misdemeanor harrassment disqualifies a person from owning, possessing, or controlling a gun

HB 2629 - Rap Back

HB 2632 - Emergency Hospitalization results in immediate removal of all firearms

How many peopel supported them tho ?? when you look of the ratio of people against and for, to the people who knew these laws were even in play, the ratio is still in our faavor, The problem is we have a ruling class who think they know best and do what they want rather then what the people want.

True. We were ignored.

Apparently because we lack funding to buy enough politicians off.

I'm willing to work my butt off, HRA is too, but if nobody gives a shit why should I bother? If this kind of crap legislation isn't enough to get people pissed off and willing to do something I don't know what is.

I'm beginning to think I should just focus my efforts on getting the f*ck out of this state to somewhere the Constitution is still considered something worth protecting and respecting.

I am starting to think your way too. The roots are deep. Born and raised here, but still think of leaving.
My kid did. Saw no future here as backwards as this place is sometimes. Sold his boat, truck and all that he didn't need and left.
Drives trucks on the mainland now doing well.
That said, what is the next step? Do we have any more chances? where do these measures go from here? and how do we keep fighting?
If any of this gets to the guv, you know he will sign.
