I sort of get the desire to own an AR-15 in the AK-47 round 7.62x39.

Would anyone here want to buy an AK-47 chambered for the 5.56x45 NATO round?

If so, why?

If not, why not?

I wanted to be different. Already owned other guns in .223/5.56, so one less caliber to look for when shopping.

I would be interested in an AK in 5.56 NATO if the price was right (not very expensive).  Like the poster above, I have a bunch of ARs in 5.56 and a good amount of ammo for it, so another gun that utilizes that same caliber would be useful and also fun to do comparisons.  I would anticipate it being more of a range and plinking gun, but I think it would be fun and interesting.  I've looked into other guns in 5.56, but generally the high cost has kept me away (SCAR, Tavor, FS2000, etc). 

I have an AK in 7.62x39, but I have never considered an AR in that caliber for some reason.  AK ammo is still relatively inexpensive compared to 5.56, but not like how it used to be.

I had an SLR106fr. Used only circle 10 mags. I had a couple hiccups in the several hundred rounds fired, even with different mags. Based on that, I sold it and got an AR. Circle 10 mags are hugely expensive. I'm guessing the taper of the 5.56/.223 being not as aggressive as 7.62x39/5.45 caused the hiccups.

(No this wasn't the early production model with feed ramp issues). 

Second Rifle Purchased was an Slr-106 F. Bought Several circle 10 out the gate and cried once. Only had feeding issue with one clear magazine. I can definitely appreciate purists traditional view of specific calibers to certain platforms, as I also bought a 762 version which I love to shoot as well. I think having an ak chambered in 223/556 would be awesome for a shooter who already owns an AR or other carbine that shoots 223/556. I have to say that I really tend to shoot my 223 ak version more as it just doesn't wear me down as 762 does after a full day of training. Ak or AR, both are made in several different calibers, more choices always seemed like a great idea to me.

How about an I.O. "Archer" in 5.56?

Picked up one of their more recent versions late in 2014, added a few FB parts to update it into the current Wz.2004 Beryl (more or less), and haven't looked back.   It's one of my favorite AK type rifles to shoot... Very accurate, super reliable, and quite cool looking without being over the top "tacticool"

I can't speak to issues with I.O.'s other offerings but can certainly speak to the issues regarding the Archer... Only one so far was with a friend’s early version, which had the muzzle device pinned upside-down.   Other than that they’ve been solid firearms (my example and the ones owed by two other friends).   Of course you could also wait until Fabryka Broni USA sets up shop, I believe they’ll have the complete line of civi-legal Beryl rifles available.

Not much of an AK fan. Nothing wrong with AK's, just not for me. To me the flavor and feel of the AK has a lot to do with the cartridge it fires. Same goes for the milsurp guns I have such as the Mosin Nagant.

I am more of an AR fan though not necessarily in traditional calibers. I have two so far with a third on the way. So I get the desire to have numerous AR's in different chamberings. I would get the AK fan to want an AK in different chamberings. But what I am hearing is that  most of you want a different rifle in the same chambering as their AR and other rifles. In other words, different rifles in 5.56x45. So the appeal is not so much having the same style of rifle in different calibers but different rifles in the same caliber.

This is exactly why I asked this question. I own a few different 30 caliber military rifles from the turn of the century to Korean War era. And they all fire different cartridges. Even though each cartridge fires a similar weight bullet at similar velocity each rifle feels so different. Some kick pretty hard while others are relatively soft shooting. I feel like the cartridge is a major portion of the personality of each rifle. Which is why my AR's are in different calibers. Unfortunately, this means I have to have a large number of different cartridges to reload for.

556/223 is the worst choice in an ak. As stated earlier mag selection is a problem. When you can find the RIGHT mag it can be costly. I have seen reliability problems even with Arsenal made rifles in this caliber. What is worse than an unreliable ak? I prefer a 545x39 ak74 over any 556 ak even with the lack of 7n6 ammo that BHO banned. If you really want a rifle in 556 get an ar.
