Is it legal to ship firearms  in a matson contaner?
Are you liable if firearm is stolen during transportation?
Difference between long gun and handgun?

Assuming No ammo is being shipped in the container.
Assuming you are moving to a gun friendly state like Arizona.
Assuming you properly report the firearm stole.

This came up in a discussion I had at Xring... please cite law if stating it illegal.

Nothing illegal by law, but its a private company and may have their own policies against firearms, read their contract.

It was over 8 years ago but I believe my container was a Matson. They moving company would not let me ship powder, primers and ammunition. But all my firearms were inventoried and arrived in good shape. My second move from the Big Island to Oahu was Young Bros if my memory is correct. Same rules.

It has been 8 years so things could have changed.

I shipped my guns and nearly 20,000 rds of ammo in a YB container from OAHU to the Big Island.  I said nothing and they didn't ask.

Military contracted movers do it everyday (Matson, etc.) No powders or ammo, doesn't matter pistol or rifle.
It is your responsibility to know the laws you are moving to.

I also did a separate rider with my insurance company. Once it's documented by the moving company and in their possession, you dont have liability until you sign on the receiving end.

There are a few extra forms to complete, but completely doable within the companies policies.

I think moving companies might have an issue if they handle the packages/boxes.  However, if you're packing the container on your own, I believe Matson is ok with that.  At least they used to.

Don't the shotgun guys have a container delivered to the range about once or twice a year?  It was my understanding that they get together and put together a big shipment of stuff that normally is pricey to ship due to hazmat fees.

As mentioned shipping firearms to yourself is not an issue by law, but as others mention, private companies may have their own regulations that they follow.  Ammunition is another story.  Anything over 66lbs in one shipment falls under Hazardous Materials rules under 49 CFR Part 172.  YB will accept for shipment 66lbs or less of small arms ammunition under the current limited quantity black and white diamond labeling which no longer denotes small arms ammunition like the old ORM-D labeling which is now defunct.

What about liability? Would the individual be liable if the firearms were stolen out of the contaner while it is in matson hands?

Liability in regards to theft, damage or lost?

You would have to check the individual shipper to confirm if the item is OK to ship and then you would need to look into insuring your items accordingly.
