How do you catalog your firearms?
« on: May 20, 2016, 03:58:30 PM »
Just curious how do my fellow enthusiasts catalog their firearms so you know what you have. I've been working on mine as to not loose track of what I got. For me it's takin some time but I'm getting there. I take a picture then a small description and maybe what I paid or worth. So how do you do yours?

I used something similar without the pics when had enough guns to warrant it... know with only a handful it is no longer a problem. I had cataloged a friends collection for him in a SD card with pics and specs

I have been pondering this and started just by making a written list by type. In the future I plan on making a book and spreadsheet capturing when, where I got it how much it costed and such. I did start making a book of redacted registrations to keep on hand while at the range or transporting my firearms.

Nice work you must be bored convalescing?

No time like the present time. Lol
Its just something that's been bothering me. I secure my firearms in different locations at home due to full safes plus bussines location. When I try to find a specific piece finding it sometimes drives me crazy and digging in safes so this also helps me to determine which safe it's in and which location plus registration information is ... bam right next to its pictures in the catalog.

I don't have that many to lose track of but I tag each with a stringed tag stating model, brand, cal.
For pistols I tag the sock with same info.  My brain is my catalog for my small collection, and instructions to my kid of types and what to do with them when I pass away.

Smell.  Each firearm has a unique odor, which persists despite changes in solvents or lubricants.  I know each fragrance intimately, and catalog my firearms by the hippocampic reactions each whiff produces.
The difference between theory and reality is that, in theory, there is no difference between theory and reality.

Itemizer app. Download pic of firearm from internet, enter my info on customizable fields of whatever I want to note of individual firearm. Can even print if I desired. All from iPad.

LOL this sorta was my current now outdated system. This system worked well keeping it together but doesn't tell me what and where I had the item

I thought about this method but I frequently change bags or gun socks depends on how many firearms I'm taking or using so it's nice having a picture with all the details in my book which I have in alphabetical order by manufacturer.

Tom G ... you use the mother and offspring method. You can find the specific one with your eyes closed. Nice! Lol

I keep the registration paperwork along with receipts together.  I don't have that many guns and they are relatively easy to keep track of as they don't run off by themselves.

That said, lately, when friends ask me how many guns I have, it does take me a while to run a mental inventory.  I've only sold off one of my guns, so easy to remember.

I dont have a catalog for any of my firearms, HPD keeps a list of all the firearms i own along with description and serial numbers so i dont have to.

There are some people who aren't quite so lucky to have hpd list everything they own.
You are so fortunate.
