According to Daniel at Kanehoe Gun Shop you should have at least 1,000 rounds of every major caliber you shoot.

Personally, I have enough of every caliber that is important to me except for Standard Velocity .22.

Whoa. Thats short yellow bus crazee!!!

Enough to last me through a prolonged period of NO commercial ammo available locally, especially in .223.5.56, 9mm; and .22LR..

Many in the 2aHawaii ohana can recall the widespread panic buying and hoarding after the 2008 and 2012 elections. The Sandy Hook school shooting in Dec 2012, and calls for new restrictions meant ARs and high-cap magazines were sold out everywhere .Remember the insane lines at HPD.  Ammo supplies were also soon exhausted or ridiculously overpriced.

Today's Orlando massacre won't help matters. Be ready for more shortages.
.

Those that have been shooting for many years have experienced some major changes and droughts. I think those people are prepared. I could always use more but I'm not worried at all. The top 2 biggest reasons I started reloading was #1; Accuracy, #2: Not having to rely on factory ammo and supplies cost is just a benefit of the previous 2

High-quality factory match ammo in .223  is probably a little more  consistent than I can produce reloading at home, but at a much higher price.
Reloading  even has a price advantage over standard factory ammo, since prices haven't come down below about 36 cents per round for .223. (I don''t use steel-case ammo.)

There was a time when no LGS stocked 6.5 Grendel ammo. Roll yr own was the only answer.

Reloading requires a lot of time. But the Dillon 550 on my work bench isn't going anywhere soon.

I know a little off topic but if you don't mind me asking, what factory ammo are you talking about? My experience is quite different.

Black Hills, Federal Match, the expensive stuff.  I said "probably more consistent." Just guessing, since I don't chronograph what I shoot. My handloads group well enough from an AR15 at Kokohead. And the ability to adjust COL for my bolt action .223 is an advantage. But I haven't done enough to believe my handloads are better.

Federal Gold Metal Match is good. Black Hills as well. FGMM is what i judge most rifles with in that if it doesn't shoot that well, it probably won't shoot much else any better. I think If you're willing to do the work, your reloads should far surpass those. Of course it takes a lot of experimenting and tuning.
