Bass pro shop, Dicks and a few other shops in Vegas will not sell long guns to Hawaii residents. Many different excuses and Bass pro shop couldn't explain why.

The only people I know that can buy firearms from another state is active duty military and FFLs.  Or through the CMP.  Otherwise the store would have to ship it to an FFL here, and you pick it up from them.

It's a federal law.

Wrong.

Nevada passed legislation to sell to anyone from any state.

There are no federal laws preventing the sale of firearms to out-of-state individuals unless the state they are buying from has laws against it or the state they reside in has laws against it.

The only firearms that need to be shipped are pistols.

Concur 100%

I've purchased quite a few long guns in Vegas as well as a few other states.   In the case of BassPro and even Sportsman's Warehose, the restriction is often a store or company policy.

I thought this Federal law covers purchase of firearms in another state.  If so Federal law should override state law.

18 U.S.C. 922(a)(5)

(a) It shall be unlawful—
(5) for any person (other than a licensed importer, licensed manufacturer, licensed dealer, or licensed collector) to transfer, sell, trade, give, transport, or deliver any firearm to any person (other than a licensed importer, licensed manufacturer, licensed dealer, or licensed collector) who the transferor knows or has reasonable cause to believe does not reside in (or if the person is a corporation or other business entity, does not maintain a place of business in) the State in which the transferor resides; except that this paragraph shall not apply to (A) the transfer, transportation, or delivery of a firearm made to carry out a bequest of a firearm to, or an acquisition by intestate succession of a firearm by, a person who is permitted to acquire or possess a firearm under the laws of the State of his residence, and (B) the loan or rental of a firearm to any person for temporary use for lawful sporting purposes;

Oh nevermind I see it now.  I didn't know it was possible.  Anyother states out there like this?  I'm reading that the sale has to meet Hawaii State laws too, so I'm guessing you have to show them your long gun permit?  I can see how the stores would not want to do this as they would have to go through requirements for all 50 states.

(b) It shall be unlawful for any licensed importer, licensed manufacturer, licensed dealer, or licensed collector to sell or deliver—

(2) any firearm to any person in any State where the purchase or possession by such person of such firearm would be in violation of any State law or any published ordinance applicable at the place of sale, delivery or other disposition, unless the licensee knows or has reasonable cause to believe that the purchase or possession would not be in violation of such State law or such published ordinance;

(3) any firearm to any person who the licensee knows or has reasonable cause to believe does not reside in (or if the person is a corporation or other business entity, does not maintain a place of business in) the State in which the licensee’s place of business is located, except that this paragraph (A) shall not apply to the sale or delivery of any rifle or shotgun to a resident of a State other than a State in which the licensee’s place of business is located if the transferee meets in person with the transferor to accomplish the transfer, and the sale, delivery, and receipt fully comply with the legal conditions of sale in both such States (and any licensed manufacturer, importer or dealer shall be presumed, for purposes of this subparagraph, in the absence of evidence to the contrary, to have had actual knowledge of the State laws and published ordinances of both States), and (B) shall not apply to the loan or rental of a firearm to any person for temporary use for lawful sporting purposes;

Hawaii laws only apply to in-state purchases/transfers; they don't care about anything out of state.

Certain stores choose not to sell to out-of-staters because of their liberal polices, nothing more.

Long guns, and no you shouldn't need a Hawaii state permit. That only applies to instate purchases. I concur with Boomah that it is there own store policies. It is possible that in the past they got flak from the Hawaii DOJ attorney's.

I am in Vegas right now and went to look at 3 gun shops and two sporting goods stores, Big 5 and Sportsman's Warehouse.  All are awesome, especially Sportsman's Warehouse.  They carry a large amount of guns, ammo and the only place I found that carry steel targets.  Lots of gun shops here.  Even Pahrump, with a population less than that of Kailua Oahu has at least 7 gun shops.  In one store a woman was shopping for a .243 Winchester for her 12 yr old daughter.

Interesting.  I've looked at possibly buying a long gun when I have traveled out of state.  I recall in Alaska and Washington, the handful of shops that I visited said that sales to out of state residents wasn't allowed.  That said, I wasn't that serious about buying something at the time and didn't press or look into deeper.  Makes sense though.

I would've thought that in Alaska, that firearm purchases from out of state visitors might be common (or at least not rare) with so many visitors on hunting trips.  During my last couple of trips to Alaska, I was mostly looking at bringing ammo home, stuff that isn't readily available on the shelves here.

If I bought a firearm in Vegas, I'd likely have to buy a case to ship it in as well.  Not a big deal if I was winning in that said trip.   ;D

Pahrump obviously has the benefit of being the de facto community for Front Sight.

I agree, as Stockpile Defense, which is the first shop you see driving into Pahrump and has an ammo store at FS, claims to sell between 15-18 MILLION rds of ammo a year. :o

I'm off to Vegas next week too.  I'll usually go to Walmart and pickup whatever cheap ammo I can find.  For most airlines, you can take up to 11 pounds of ammo in your checkin luggage.  Keep them in their original boxes and I inform the checkin person about the ammo.  Alaska Airlines allows for 50 pounds.  Check with the specific airlines about weight limits and requirements.

Ammo has to be in original box/container or a container designed specifically for ammo. Main thing that the airlines are concerned with is that ammo isn't "loose" while in cargo so no loose ammo in a ziplock bag, etc.

You can pack it with your other items in the factory box, up to 11 lbs.
