Presbyopia and shooting glasses
« on: June 15, 2016, 10:06:46 AM »
Well, after procrastinating for 49 years, I've officially joined the ranks of the presbyopic.
I've acknowledged for a couple of years that having prescription glasses to read made life easier, but that was due to a mild astigmatism, nothing more.  I just went in for my annual eye exam, and presto! Presbyopia! I'd kind of been hoping to miss that one.  Anyway...

I'd been toying with the idea of getting prescription shooting classes anyway. I think I may even have posted about it here seeking recommendations. But now, I'd have to choose which prescription to use: reading or distance.  I assume "reading," but the front sight on some of my Mausers is more than 30" away from my eye. Is that still reading distance?

Educate me!
The difference between theory and reality is that, in theory, there is no difference between theory and reality.

I dealt with that same diagnosis a year ago. Your lense hardens with age and lose the ability to focus at close objects. In summary, as I iterated in another post you have to focus on your front sight NOT the target before you press the trigger. In general, a +.75 is a place to start for a lense. I'd see your optometrist first. Most reading glasses I find at Longs and Wally World were too powerful for me. By luck I found a +1.00. Try some and look at an object that would be at the length of your front sight.
...
Yeah.
Your lens and hearing get harder with age.
Everything else gets softer.

Softer but wiser, right? Hopefully LOL

I started using progressive lenses a little over a year ago. Great for everyday wear, not so good for shooting though, as I had to tilt my head back to see the front sight clearly. I recently got a pair of glasses just for shooting. Non-dominant eye corrected for distance, dominant eye corrected for the front sight. It works extremely well for me, but I mainly shoot pistol. I put them on in the morning before i shoot to let my brain get used to them, haven't had any issues so far.  I do shoot with both eyes open though, both with rifle and pistol. The progressives work fine if I'm shooting with optics, both scope and red dot.
