Vote is TODAY! Update: All the measures failed!

The Senate vote is today, Monday, June 20, 2016. Here is the NRA-ILA link:

This is the activism forum, correct? Here's your chance. I just called and spoke to a live person at Hirono's office and left a message on Schatz's automated system. Of course they will vote for any and all anti-self-defense and anti-firearms-rights bills, but at least they know there are some people out here who vehemently oppose what they are doing. Yeah, I was vehement in my phone calls and had the stats re the "terrorist watch list" to back it up.

I need you to call your Senators right away and urge them to OPPOSE all the gun control legislation that may be voted on as early as today.

You can reach your two Senators at 202-224-3121.

Please call the Capitol Switchboard at that above number and then ask to speak to your two Senators.

They are Sen. Brian Schatz (D) and Sen. Mazie Hirono (D).

Anti-gun groups are having people call their Senators to push them to vote for gun control legislation that will threaten YOUR RIGHTS.

And people are calling by the thousands to support gun control.

Of course, your Second Amendment rights will be sacrificed -- all in the name of stopping people from buying guns if they’re on a government watch list.

Here’s What We Know

The Orlando killer wasn’t on a “no-fly” list.
He wasn’t being currently investigated by the FBI.
He passed numerous background checks, and was a licensed security guard in a courthouse.
Thus, no amount of proposed federal gun control could have prevented the Orlando terrorist from purchasing a gun.

This killer WAS an ISIS-loving terrorist who openly expressed his desire to engage in mass murder prior to his 911 declaration from the Pulse nightclub.

He WAS the subject of an FBI investigation two years ago, and the FBI gave him a pass.
And he committed his atrocity in a Gun-Free Zone, where all the victims were disarmed by law.
Not surprisingly, the anti-gun Democrats in Washington are ignoring all this -- and are pressing for gun control legislation to pass today or later this week.

Several Senate votes are expected on different pieces of legislation.  Some are horrid.  Others are bad, but just not as awful as the horrid bills.

Gun Control Proposals Being Voted on Soon

Anti-gun Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) will force a vote on legislation that allows the Justice Department to block gun sales to those on terror watch list.
But while absolutely anyone can be placed on this list, there is no way for you to know if you’re on the list or not.

In order to get off the watch list, you have to first challenge to Justice Department administratively, and then sue them.

There is also text by Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) to impose Universal Background Checks -- which would essentially result in universal registration of gun buyers.
Finally, there may be some Constructive Republican Alternative Proposals (CRAP) that may be offered.  These CRAP proposals are changing, almost minute by minute, so we will examine them and alert you as soon as possible.

But bottom line, you simply need to tell your Senators to vote AGAINST all gun control this week.

And while you're at it, tell them to vote FOR dismantling Gun-Free Zones and establishing concealed carry reciprocity -- two things that actually could have made a HUGE difference in Orlando.

So again, I need you to call Sen. Brian Schatz (D) and Sen. Mazie Hirono (D) right away at 202-224-3121.

Tell them to VOTE NO on any gun control legislation that comes up this week -- including the Feinstein and Murphyamendments.

In Liberty,
Erich Pratt
Executive Director
Gun Owners of America

P.S. While I normally provide emails for you to send, there is no time for that today.  Please call Sen. Brian Schatz (D) and Sen. Mazie Hirono (D) right away at 202-224-3121 -- and urge them to oppose ALL GUN CONTROL proposals this week. And urge them to tell Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to bring up legislation repealing Gun-Free Zones and establishing concealed carry reciprocity.

Updated this morning to allow for an "automated" email to both senators... but I'd suggest calling them as well.

All the measures failed. Thanks to all who took the time to email and/or call. Though I'm sure Schatz and Hirono voted FOR the the anti-2A bills, but I haven't seen the individual votes yet.

Gun control measures fail to clear Senate hurdle

A series of dueling gun control measures in the Senate were defeated Monday evening in the first proposed legislation in the wake of the Orlando terror attack.

The first vote was on the amendment by Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, to enhance funding for an existing gun background check system which needed 60 votes to pass. The final vote tally was 53 to 47.

The second vote was on a measure by Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., to expand gun background checks and close the so-called gun show loophole where firearm purchases are not tracked. The final vote tally was 44 to 56.

Republican Sen. John Cornyn of Texas pushed a measure that would allow the government to delay a gun sale to a suspected terrorrist for 72 hours, but require prosecutors to go to court to show probable cause to block the sale permanently. The National Rifle Associated backed the legislation, but it failed in a final vote of 53 to 47.

The fourth and final vote involved a measure by Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., to keep people on a government terrorism watch list or other suspected terrorists from buying guns. The Justice Department endorsed her legislation, but it also failed with a final vote count of 47 to 53.

The votes came after Murphy filibustered for almost 15 hours last week seeking action in response to the killing of 49 people in the gay nightclub Pulse by Omar Mateen, a Florida man who pledged his loyalty to ISIS in the midst of the rampage.

“It’s hard to believe, but still true, that our Republican colleagues voted to allow suspected terrorists to buy guns," said Sen. Charles Schumer, D-NY, in a statement after the votes. "We will keep pushing until they see the light.”

Since lawmakers were unable to come together on a piece of compromise legislation, the individual bills faced long odds. Democrats were expected to block two Republican amendments, arguing that they fall short in controlling the sales of firearms. In turn, Republicans were certain to block two Democratic amendments, contending they threaten the constitutional rights of gun owners.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said the Orlando attack shows the best way to prevent attacks by extremists is to defeat such groups overseas.

"Look, no one wants terrorists to be able to buy guns or explosives," McConnell said. He suggested that Democrats were using the day's votes "as an opportunity to push a partisan agenda or craft the next 30-second campaign ad," while Republicans wanted "real solutions."

Murphy said on ABC’s “The Week” that the passage of the measures was unlikely and focused on the response to the filibuster.

"It wasn't just that 40 senators came to the floor and supported my effort to get these votes but there were millions of people all across the country who rose up and who joined our effort," he said.

Attorney General Loretta Lynch told “Fox News Sunday” that she also supported Cornyn’s proposal. Lynch said such an amendment would give the federal government the ability to stop a sale to somebody on the terror watch list.

However, she argued the federal government needs flexibility and the authority to protect the classified information used in denying a sale, if potential buyers exercise the constitutional rights to file an appeal.

“The American people deserve for us to take the greatest amount of time,” Lynch said.

The Pulse Orlando nightclub shooter was added to a government watch list of individuals known or suspected of being involved in terrorist activities in 2013, when he was investigated for inflammatory statements to co-workers. But he was pulled from that database when that investigation was closed 10 months later.

Both the Feinstein and Cornyn amendments would have tried to ensure that individuals like Mateen who had been a subject of a terrorism investigation within the last five years are flagged. Grassley's would have required that law enforcement be notified if a person had been investigated in the last five years and attempted to purchase a gun.

Last week, presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump tweeted that he would meet with the NRA about "not allowing people on the terrorist watch list, or the no fly list, to buy guns." Exactly what he would support was unclear.

Separately, moderate Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine is working with other Republicans, as well as talking to Democrats, on a bill that would prevent people on the no-fly list — a smaller universe than targeted by Democrats — from getting guns. But her bill had not been blessed by GOP leaders and it was unclear if it would get a vote.

In the GOP-controlled House, Republicans had no plans to act on guns and Democrats were unable to force any action, given House rules less favorable to the minority party than in the Senate.

As expected, Schatz and Hirono both voted AYE for the bills that were against our rights, and NAY for the bills that we supported.

Gee, I wonder if they got a lot more phone calls and emails for the positions they voted, or if they just ignored us?
