Knives - What Are Your Preferences?
« on: June 23, 2016, 08:28:59 AM »
What are your preferences for knives?

General question as I have a buddy in TN that makes custom knives.  He started producing and selling a couple of years ago and he's gotten quite good.  His blades are good quality, from what I can tell, and they seem decently priced.  He's started making "Damascus" blades and I've always meant to get him started on one for me.  I have a few now, but they were ones that he either made on his own or I bought from an idea from another.  While I want a custom knife, I can't seem to settle on what I'd want.  I generally see knives for other people and I'm like "wow!  that's a cool blade!"

I also understand that the blade shape depends on use, and frankly I don't use knives that much in my daily routine.  Even my pocket knife is pretty much a box opener.  Anyways, I just wanted to get ideas on what some people's preferences are.

Here are a few that I've thought about as starting point for a custom blade.

For edc, I keep going back to Benchmade knives usually a small folding tanto style blade.
For cooking, I use a japanese vegetable knife with holes in it.
I also use Cutco knives for a lot of kitchen tasks.. I Especially love the sandwich maker.
It's shaped like a putty knife with a serrated edge.
It cuts your meat and veggies and spreads your butter and mayo too.

I have about 4 folding knives with 3"-4" blades that I rotate as my everyday carry.

I don't usually carry a fixed blade unless hiking or something. I have been thinking of getting a smaller fixed blade to put on my maxpedition fanny pack though. Haven't settled on the design.

I do knife work as a hobby and side business. Folders are above my current level of experience but when I want a fixed blade, I generally make my own now.

There are literally thousands of options for you. Size, use, price, etc. Set out some specifics to narrow the conversation.

For folders, I have all sorts, but I prefer Benchmade and occasionally have Kershaw.   I have Spyderco and CRKT as well and some cheaper ones like Buck and the like.

Didn't think about kitchen knives, but I have Global, Henkel and Wustoff.

I have a couple of Cutco knives that I got suckered into when a buddy was a sales rep.  They make good knives though.

As for blade types, I tend to stay away from tanto shapes mainly due to humbug in sharpening.  Same with serrated blades and blades with concave sections.

I don't carry a fixed blade on me, though one of my best friend's uncle had one on him at all times when we were in Vegas.  It was probably a 4-5" blade, so not a Crocodile Dundee "now that's a knife", but a decent sized one.

My buddy who makes knives said the same thing about folders.  Though I am not really interested in folders.

Options are also largely driven by use.  If I still lived in WA, I'd have much more uses when I would hike and camp to fish and stuff.  Nowadays, I don't really have a "need" for a fixed blade, but since when has that stopped a guy from wanting one and buying one?

My EDC is a Bradford M390 steel fixed.  I use my knife a lot at work and borders on abuse.  The steel is what you want to look into.  This M390 holds an edge.  I used to carry cheaper knives, but this make life so much easier. No need for constant resharpening when you get something in a high quality knife steel.

It is not a large blade.  small enough to not scare the sheeple, but still effective if needed.

The blades that I bought so far from my friend in TN.  The first was the bottom one that I bought when he was closing some blades out to buy more material for the next batch.  I wanted something in that general size.  It has a nice weight and balance to it, but I don't care for the concave portion of the belly of the blade.  This was one of his early blades and while it's good, he's gotten WAY better.

The next is the one with the greenish G10 scales.  It's supposed to be a horizontal belt carry "neck knife".

All come VERY sharp!  I put the Kershaw Blur in there for size reference.

I believe you posted that blade before.  I have a similar size EDCC one, but I like the pointed profile of that one better.  I also don't mind spending more on good steel.  I've had cheap dive knives that you'd need a damn diamond file to get any material off and then it wouldn't hold an edge for crap.

So you carry this fixed "around town" or just for work?

Here's one that he made for one of my buddies.  It's a pretty big knife!

As mentioned above, I'm not a fan of the concave section of the blade.  The maker also likes jimping of all sorts of different patterns.  I'm personally not a fan of the more elaborate jimping, but some for grip near the base of the blade is cool.

Here is one I made recently for my tac vest. A little over 4" blade. I could EDC it but I might make another fixed, slightly smaller, and with a more traditional point.

Nope, have a special belt just for it.

I just can't fit the belt at the moment, but in time I'll be right as rain.

Is that like a chisel at the tip/end?

That's an interesting configuration.  What is the intent/purpose for such a design?

Maybe you could use a back scabbard.   ;D

custom knives are so expensive, I would hate to use them
I usually end up using my cheaper blades for edc and every day use
I'm always looking for that "next" knife
my most used EDC is a fox tactical assisted opener with flipper, pocket clip easily fits pockets and most of my belts, so its easy to carry and/or conceal

this is one of my favorites:  Boker Plus Valkyrie, about 1/4 inch blade thickness

Pretty much at all times that I have a belt on.
