Shotgun Magazine Tube Spring

Aloha,

Just checking to see if any shotgun owners could chime in on this based of their experiences.

Basically I have a Mossberg 500 and unlike the 590s and Remington 870s the mag tube is difficult to remove to access the mag tube spring. Im the kind of person that wants to be able to easily access key components for preventative maintenance and so forth.

Would simply leaving the mag tub spring "unattended" for a long time i.e. not being able to simply wipe it down once in a while or wipe down the inside of the magazine tube be an issue?

i rarely clean mine. i could probably have never cleaned it and been ok.
i shoot more than average, 100-300 hundred rounds a month. when i shoot skeet i shoot at least 2 rounds (25 shells per round) plus i regularly bring a friend that hasnt shot before or doesnt own a shotgun so they use mine, doubling the round count.. ive also used it in 3 or 4 hdf shotgun days where its dusty and gets laid on the ground and shot from the prone position.

main thing is to use a dry lube and not run it wet in oil, and to upgrade to an extra power spring and a new robust follower.

Thanks. Just thought I'd ask cause I have 200 rounds thru it and its only been shot indoors at Honolulu Firearms. Nothing outdoor YET. That was my concern was taking the gun to one of HDF's shotgun days and eventually dirt may get in there, or worse moisture if it happens to rain that day.

The Mossberg 500 models just make it so hard to remove the tube from the receiver. I tried to loosen the loctite with heat but it still won't budge. I'll try again later. It just irritates me that I can't get access to it and I do want to swap out the factory spring for one from Wolff Springs and definitely a better follower from GG&G.
