I feel it would be in the best interest of myself and my family to be able to one defend myself if need be and two  be able to hunt so I just wanted to know if anybody can tell me if I can still get  a gun permit so I can buy the hunting rifle and a hand gun.  Even though I have two petty misdemeanor from a very long time ago.

Not all misdemeanors are created equal!  If you want to know before applying, it's best to call the firearms division and ask. 

Generally, charges involving violence, domestic abuse or firearms may disqualify you, but only HPD will know for sure after you give them your specific case details.

Your best bet is to go apply for a permit and see what comes back.

You don't have to post any specifics about your past but as far as any criminal cases go, it is possible that misdemeanor and petty misdemeanor cases could exclude you. Cases involving violence can exclude you from owning a firearm but here is the catch. Lets say the case was downgraded from a violent crime to a non violent crime they could still deny you a firearm permit if the case itself involved violence. For example an assault case that is downgraded to a harassment charge. If the details of the case involved violence then they could still consider it a crime of violence. I don't know how they draw the line though and ultimately the only way to find out for sure it to apply for a permit.

I encourage you to go for it. Did you find time to pay for fingerprints and apply? 

On Maui I saw a guy with a half tattooed face apply and despite his record (whatever it was, clerk made reference to it) he had been granted a permit. But the funny part for him, was he didn't follow up in 2 weeks.  They give you a slip of paper with your permit #.  You can place a phone call or appear in person to pick up the permit. He actually stated that he thought they would call HIM, which is not the case, so he had to start all over again.

The process can be confusing, but I'm sure you're more organized than that particular individual. You'll get good support in the group regarding procedure, etc.
