The show nekkid and afraid is 1 man and 1 woman.  Sometimes the woman is a looker and sometimes, not so much.

There was one episode where this woman was paired with a good looking guy but turned out he was gay.  She seemed kinda disappointed.
Did she turn him ghey?   ???

One huge risk of staying at that Vancouver Island location, is something I am not sure the contestants knew about.

There is a fungus that is rampant in that location, and it can be very harmful to humans.

I forget its name but I know about this from years ago and they ("experts") could not get rid of it, so I'm sure it must be much more prevalent now compared to 10 years ago, with all the humidity up there (you can see the humidity and even some fungal growth, in one of the episodes, but they probably were not really sure what fungus it was or how harmful it is).

These survival shows are pretty extreme and it seems the more extreme, the more viewers, so they try to make it extreme.

In another survival type show, with an urban setting, called THE COLONY, its season 3 was cancelled (and the whole show cancelled, which is a real pity) because someone actually got killed during the shooting of season 3 (I think from falling or something).

Regarding ALONE (************ SPOILER ALERT BELOW **************)...

I see that a huge reason for people quitting is because their moods spiraled down, and even though they say it is due to loneliness, a big reason is lack of nutrition. Those guys are getting only a few hundred calories per day (if even that). So aside from all the other gear, I think if I had to do it, in order to stay as long as possible, I'd pack all the food they allow. THEN I'd pack some other gear. You cannot fish enough there. They seem to time it so that the fishing is good for a month or so, and then it dries up due to the season. So by the time day 40 rolls around, most of the people are totally SOL regarding food sources. You can see how desperate they are around Day 50, compared to Day 20 or 30 when they are getting seafood.

Of course, a tarp is important, and one of those silky saws would be crucial, and firestarter (too wet there for friction fires), and pot. Aside from these, those guys can scavenge stuff from the shoreline (which is sort of cheating IMHO, and different locations will give people different chances of getting bonus items).

Season 2 was pretty good though, very surprising endings to the whole season and many surprising endings to the contestants too, even very early on.
Poisonous shrooms and red tide were the warnings that I recall being mentioned on the show.

I'm sure the lack of nutrition didn't help their mental states, which the commentary also mentioned lack of nutrition being a factor.  Though I thought that Mike guy (the one who built a cooking table, football game, etc) kept himself pretty darn busy with inventive things was going to last longer.

I thought the Colony was more like a WWE version of survival shows.

Well, COLONY you do learn stuff about various SHTF related topics.

About the ONLY "survival" show where you don't actually learn much is, ironically, SURVIVOR.

Here's that fungus I mentioned. It's either this one, or the other one also mentioned in this article:

I watched one season of the Colony and I enjoyed it.  I think it was the post-Katrina like scenario.  Yeah, you can learn some things.  It's just when they had the rouge elements come in and staged an attack on the survivors, just reminded me of WWE.  Didn't intend to insult your choice in shows.

Haha no problem dude, I don't easily take offense.

You should check out the other season of COLONY. Not sure which one you saw. They each present different settings and new ways of thinking about scenarios (not necessarily only for SHTF).

I know that there are some grown adults that would be crushed if you spoke ill about their beloved WWE.  I have to admit I was into WWF back in the day.   Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat! ;D

I just checked and The Colony is available on the Discovery Channel website.  If it's available On-Demand, I might watch again.

There are many more channel apps these days, and they give you the videos for free. You just have to sit through their annoying ads.

Not sure about Discovery though. Maybe they have it. I downloaded a ton of such apps and view them all free.

This even includes AMC (Walking Dead) and of course History Channel.

I don't subscribe to TV packages. So much to watch already.

It appears we ought to be checking our kits now, with two storms heading this way.: Doesn't matter how much stuff you have if you can't prevent someone else from taking it. "Live aloha" will only go so far if Oahu gets a direct hit like Kauai had from Iniki.

Got my water stocked from the previous storms and bought couple extra 6V batterys for my 1970's era fluorescent lantern.  Price sure went up for the 6Vs.
If Lester gets too close to Oahu, plan to get ice for the coolers.  I'm thinking of prepping a water barrier for the back sliding glass door out of 2" X 12" lumber edged with bicycle tire tube rubber for a seal.  Water on my back lanai has never been a problem, but you never know.
