Last call for M1 Garands?

The end may be near for the CMP M1 Garand rifles. CMP worker stated "We have not received anything from the Anniston Army depot in a long time. In my 10 years of working for CMP, Ive never seen such barren warehouses." and "as of right now, we need to borrow a "the end is near" sign... "

CMP shows out of stock right now. If you want one, you should order one when they become available again. These are WWII era surplus army rifles which go for about $700 - $1,150 shipped to your door.

General George Patton wrote in January, 1945, "In my opinion, the M1 Rifle is the greatest battle implement ever devised."

BTW:  I've heard the 2017 Defense Authorization Act wants to destroy the 1911s that were supposed to go to the CMP.

Sorry Gen. Patton, but the Mosin has been in production since 1891, and is still being used in armies, militias and wars today with good results.

Very sad and disgusting.  M1 Garands are awesome rifles.  They are very quick to shoot and reload with a little practice..  much easier and quicker to reload in position than a magazine fed semiauto.  Many underrate them.  I wish surplus ammo was more available and cheap.

How can I join the CMP program? I am pretty sure IM not alone.

FYI, the M1's shoot only specific loads of 30-06 ammo, and CMP charges a lot for shipping ammo to Hawaii.  I recommend getting an adjustable gas plug which allows you to shoot different types of commercial ammo.  Or there is a M1 version for .308 win.

One thing you might find confusing is the affiliation requirement.  The CMP site has link after link for Clubs.  If you belong to one in the list, then that's good.  For me, not so good.  Under the icon STATE ASSOCIATIONS on the CLUBS page, you'll find the one I used:  Hawaii Rifle Association. 

It's one of the benefits of being a member of HRA!   :thumbsup:

The ammo thing is one or the main reasons why we don't shoot my dad's M1 Garand. We mostly shoot his 1903 or my Rem 700

Didn't know that until your previous post about that. I'll have to ask my dad if he's interested, but I think he likes shooting my Rem 700 more, and my ammo. Haha

In that case maybe not a good idea since you can fire a M1 about 4 times faster than a Rem 700.

Service Grade M1s are available again for $730 + S&H.  Will probably sell out quickly so if you've been on the fence mail in your order ASAP.

Received this today from the CMP:

"Per the newly completed and signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the U.S. Army and the Civilian Marksmanship Program, M1 Garands will be limited to eight per calendar year, per customer. The new limit of eight M1 Garands goes into effect immediately and any customer who has purchased over eight will not be allowed to purchase more M1 Garands until 1 Jan., 2017. The CMP considers any item containing an M1 Garand receiver with a serial number to be an M1 Garand and will deduct from the eight M1 Garand rifle limit per year."

Not saying that they are closing towards being completely gone, but sales restrictions do say a way lower stock on-hand.

Not really surprising when you think about - the CMP did away with the DCM era purchase restrictions years ago. The CMP forum has plenty of examples of guys buying 50+ M1's as part of their collecting hobby. Couple that with little/no importation in the past 5 years (Greek rifles were the last en masse import) and the supply has simply dried up.
