Code Red! Hurricane Madeline and Lester
« on: August 29, 2016, 08:08:06 AM »
We got a couple of back to back hurricanes coming our way that could spoil our weekend.  Madeline could hit the big island while missing the rest of the islands as a hurricane on Wednesday night.  Then Lester could followon and hit the islands starting on Saturday.

I am thinking the Big I is going to get nailed with at least the outer side of the storm, and the track of the next look close to follow.  Stay safe and prepped brothers and sisters on the BI.

I'd call it a code red as the Big Island is about to get hit hard tomorrow.  Up to 12" of rain.

Don't get complacent.

Hurricane Lester is located about 1,355 miles east of Hilo, Hawaii. Lester's sustained winds are 120 mph, making it a powerful Category 3 hurricane. Lester is embedded in an easterly steering flow and will be sent across the open waters of the eastern Pacific, well away from any land masses, for now. A combination of mild water and low to moderate wind shear should allow Lester to weaken gradually through the next few of days. Eventually, Lester will start to encounter colder water and drier air. This will cause the tropical cyclone to weaken more rapidly later in the week as it moves in the general direction of Hawaii this weekend.

Elsewhere, Hurricane Madeline is located under 450 miles to the east of Hilo, Hawaii, with sustained winds up to 120 mph, making it a powerful Category 3 hurricane. It is tracking to the west across the open waters of the eastern Pacific. Environmental conditions favor it maintaining hurricane status over the next few days, but it is expected to gradually weaken. This system will approach Hawaii Wednesday with locally strong winds and heavy rain on Wednesday into Thursday, mainly across the Big Island.

Tried to get everything in order.  Lost one greenhouse cover with Darby.  Will probably lose more with a direct hit Cat1.  Back on Oahu but plan to go back Friday if we don't get grounded from Lester.

Will be interesting.  Fire the generator up tomorrow just for the hoodoo it gives me against anything happening.

We have dinner planned out on the BBQ if power goes out and the stove is INOP.  Generator is for the fridge and food.

So far, we have only had a hard gust of wind  or two from any storm or 'cane in the six years here on the BI.  Not even any damn rain, believe it or not.

The volcanoes do seem to mess the the storms up, unlike that flat Florida hurricane-bait.  Recall watching Flossie fall apart after hitting the BI  back when we lived on Oahu.  At least a Cat 4 bearing down did get my thumb out to buy a generator back then.

Lester bothers me with the potential to douche Oahu again, just after the last soaking.

Honolulu's terrible lack of infrastructure and the powers that be's reluctance to spend tax dollars on anything actually valuable to the public welfare puts this city in a bad spot.  Swimming in doodoo is, generally, not a healthy thing to do...  At least the rail is elevated above it all, thank goodness.

Thank your elected officials and remember that on election day.

Looks like the tropical storm might hit the BI head on.
