Yogis has button quail,  or have had before in the cages outside.  They were quite loud and the workers said their loud,  so that's why I was asking.  But people say the Japanese are quieter
Rgr, mine are Japanese quail and are near silent.

Of the 16 eggs I put in to incubate 10 hatched, 1 was cracked ( don't know how I missed that) 5 are still in and will remain in for another 24 hours.

We did put 2 eggs under a Brooding hen. 1 hatched but it was 2 days early, so it died. The other is still under so we will see

So to feed chicks you need a smaller crumble, instead of buying it pre made and having to keep multiple feed mixes i make my own from the chicken feed we blend.

Our chicken feed is made up of 3 things, Chicken feed (unmediated) a chick scratch (we sue 3 way, Cracked Corn, Whole Wheat, Milo.) and fish pellets (higher protein content)

To make our chick feed we use an old magic bullet drink blender and blend it, Its quick and easy and in a few minutes can turn chicken feed into a months worth of chick feed.

Start with our chicken feed

Blend it down to a finer mix

Finished product

This is interesting, I want to do it myself but know I wouldn't be able to kill and eat them.  I'd just collect hundreds of quails around the house.

I think for most people the eggs would be the reason to keep them and you would only have 2-3,

Huge change up for quail cages, "My Wife wanted to try and do a pen instead of cages, So this weekend was spent building a quail run/pen. Its 10ft by 5ft and should be able to house 60-80 quails.

My yard is a mess so when i tidy up i will post photos.

Im seriously considering a quail farm.

Would their poop start to become a problem as numbers increase?  Both collection or clean up as well as disposal?  Or can you use their manure for fertilizer.  I remember bringing bags of chicken manure home when I was little for the planting area around the house when I was growing up.

Bird poo dries up and does not smell, The smell comes from the ammonia it contains, We are going to lay sand on the bottom and as long as we rake it/turn it every day when we collect the eggs we should be good for 3-6 months, The sand pulls the moisture out of the poop real fast. I have seen other people do it (youtube) and read about it buy of course never tried it. Chicken poop you buy in bags from the sore as fertilizer dosent small because its dry

I remember that whatever chicken manure (or maybe mixture) that we used to bring home certainly did smell.  It was good stuff though.  Made the garden grow really well!

In your case, I was more or less asking if the quail poop could be re-used or re-purposed as fertilizer or anything else.  Or if it was just waste.  An uncle used to have geese and those bastards shit everywhere.  I think in that case, their diet was mostly grass and the poop seemed to be shredded grass.  A neighbor property guy mentioned that the poop could be used for fertilizer.  The geese had free roam through the dirt and planting areas, so sort of distributed their poop themselves.   ;D

Ahh, Black Gold, Yes we could reuses the poop as a fertilizer and if i decide to do this commercial that would be part of the income stream. At the moment tho im just trying to manage the waste level.  One of the things that was challenging me on with the quail kits i want to sell was how to handle the waste and make it manageable for the less inclined person.

If any one is interested in keeping quails ? im putting together a starter/home quail kit. Takes up less then 3ftx3ft, will come complete with every thing you need, 3 birds(females) for eggs, cage, stand, waste container, waterer, feeder and food.

Got it.  Thanks.  That's about what I was assuming/thinking.  That initially the poop would present a problem in terms of cleanup and waste, but if one found a way to collect efficiently and repurpose, then good.  Just wasn't sure if their poop was good for that, but "Black Gold" seems pretty promising.  Haha.

I would def be interested if I had a house.  Don't think I could raise them in the tub of my second bath.  Though maybe for my dad's house or another family property.
