So today my eggs arived from the mainland, We waited a week so that they wouldn't be shipped out and sitin the post office over the weekend,

The eggs are for Jumbo Coturnix Quail, These eggs are about the same size as my bantam chicken eggs, they are huge.

Total was 60 eggs sent and 60 received all in good shape, they were really well backed, they were packed in quail egg containers that had been held closed with rubber bands (the eggs are big and they containers dident close all the way). The space between the eggs was packed with wood shavings and then the box was also filled with shavings, and then double boxed. This is some of the best shipping of any product i have ever seen.

So here we go with photos.
1st is the over all box they were packed in.
2nd is ho they were packed in containers.
3rd is the containers with the lid off. (i blew most of the shavings off so you can see eggs)
4th is eggs in the incubator, As you can see i could double the number of eggs i hatch at one time and at some point in the future i might.

Ask your questions and enjoy.

Can also use a tiny frying pan to cook eggs. Look how fresh those yokes are tho. Less then 3 hours laid and into the pan they go.

Downloading now lol.

But on another note, my 2 month old quails (in the pen) haven't started laying yet and its really starting to piss me off.

I believe its one of 3 things :
1 - they all have a penis
2 - not enough protein
3 - there just being dicks

Another thing to consider is sunlight. We have pretty short days here compared to the mainland summer. If they get too much shade it might put them in "winter mode".

Added an LED light on a timer to see if that helps,

My wife said she noticed the 3 bantams we had in with them were picking on the quails, This stress might of been stopping them laying,

Those 3 chickens are no longer in with the quails but are instead in my slow cooker.

GRAPHIC CONTENT WARNING.

now i understand that most of you understand whats happening But for those that dont, I had 3 table top chickens that were occasional egg layers, These chickens were the bain of my life with getting out of the yard and going in neigbours yards, Even with their wings clipped they could jump over a 6ft tall fence. I put them into my quail enclosure to keep them contained but i found out today that they were pecking my quails (could be why my quails arent laying). So they had to go. I had planed on doing this last week but had time today. The birds are small and dont have a lot of meat BUT will make great stock. I harvested the first 2 with my wife doing all of the cleaning, My daughter asked if she could do the last one and i let her try, I wanted it to be easy for her so had her use a pair of garden shears to remove the head. They were not sharp enough (My fault) and only resulted in breaking the neck, I separated the head with a knife to make it quick. If your wondering who im talking to im talking to in the video its my 9 yr old daughter, Shes asking why its still moving.

It brought back memories about my own chicken experience.

My uncle cut off their heads, let them go, and i don't know if it an embellish memory but most would just flop on the ground, but there were a few that seem to run around. "Chicken without a head". It was pretty cool for a young kid.

Also they need sunlight to help keep down the parasites.

...unless you pump them full of antibiotics like the gross factory chicken that's so popular these days.

Yeah, cant really let them go rounding around the street lol.  I thought my milk carton chicken cone worked out well enough.

My daughter has the chikens foot drying, she wants to keep it. lol She did the whole thing tho, She killed, plucked and cleaned it.

Wow life is getting in the way of things,

Here we go.

so the quails eggs i ordered online hatched the weekend of the gun show. Again i got excited and opened the incubator to soon, So from the 60 eggs 34 hatched, 2 died in the incubator, 2 died at 2 days old,

The chicks are in a  kiddy pool in my libing room. they need a fair bit of space, I guess they are going to stay there untill they are big enough to go outside (4-6 weeks)

The out door quails are doing great, So i added 6 more to the 13 i had in there. The had all become rather noisy, They would crow (the males) (its not like a chiken crow and nowhere near as loud) during the night. So i got up one day at 4 am and said fuck it if its got a penis it needs to go . Basically one would crow and the others would resond and it would go back and forth. The male i have in my breeding cage dosent crow at night and accroding to the internet it was because there was to many males in the cage.
So i go in and check and from the 19 i had 6 males that were full crown and 2 that were a lot smaller (these guys were younger and dident crow). So i grabbed the 6 and harvested them. I didnet take any photos or video of this as it was 4am and i just wanted to go back to bed

We lost two of the outdoor quails to bullying, they were smaller and got attacked/killed by the bigger older quails. The outdoor quails have started laying eggs, I think it to many penis's in the cage that was doing it, The ladies were getting stressed/over worked by the guys.  I added a light on a timer (my other layers dont have this tho) which runs for 2-3 hours in the morning and 2-3 hours in the evingin giving them more supplemental light, As the days get longer i will decrease and eliminate this and hopefully not need it in the future.

We already had dinner planned out for  that week so these guys went in the freezer for the next week. The next week came and we cooked the quail, The meet was like dark meat chicken and there was a reasonable amount of meat on each bird, I personally ate 2 and it was just the right amount.

The micro greens were good. Because of how bust life has been i dident get to eat them all to there full potential so some wen to the quails and chickens and ducks. My daughter forgot to water a tray for a couple of days and we lost those,

with the success of the micro greens we have decided to fodder feed the animals, So fodder is a sprouted seed that they eat, by sprouting them it gives more nutrianal value equating to less feed. The seed costs about $1 a lb compared to $0.50 a lb but once sprouted provides more butrian for less $$$

The outside quail cage had 9 EGGS today, It feels like some quails lay more then once every 24 hours tho, the 3 in my breeding cage have been laying 5-7 a day since i changed it to only 1 male for 3 females.
