Wow life is getting in the way of things,
Here we go.
so the quails eggs i ordered online hatched the weekend of the gun show. Again i got excited and opened the incubator to soon, So from the 60 eggs 34 hatched, 2 died in the incubator, 2 died at 2 days old,
The chicks are in a kiddy pool in my libing room. they need a fair bit of space, I guess they are going to stay there untill they are big enough to go outside (4-6 weeks)
The out door quails are doing great, So i added 6 more to the 13 i had in there. The had all become rather noisy, They would crow (the males) (its not like a chiken crow and nowhere near as loud) during the night. So i got up one day at 4 am and said fuck it if its got a penis it needs to go . Basically one would crow and the others would resond and it would go back and forth. The male i have in my breeding cage dosent crow at night and accroding to the internet it was because there was to many males in the cage.
So i go in and check and from the 19 i had 6 males that were full crown and 2 that were a lot smaller (these guys were younger and dident crow). So i grabbed the 6 and harvested them. I didnet take any photos or video of this as it was 4am and i just wanted to go back to bed
We lost two of the outdoor quails to bullying, they were smaller and got attacked/killed by the bigger older quails. The outdoor quails have started laying eggs, I think it to many penis's in the cage that was doing it, The ladies were getting stressed/over worked by the guys. I added a light on a timer (my other layers dont have this tho) which runs for 2-3 hours in the morning and 2-3 hours in the evingin giving them more supplemental light, As the days get longer i will decrease and eliminate this and hopefully not need it in the future.
We already had dinner planned out for that week so these guys went in the freezer for the next week. The next week came and we cooked the quail, The meet was like dark meat chicken and there was a reasonable amount of meat on each bird, I personally ate 2 and it was just the right amount.
The micro greens were good. Because of how bust life has been i dident get to eat them all to there full potential so some wen to the quails and chickens and ducks. My daughter forgot to water a tray for a couple of days and we lost those,
with the success of the micro greens we have decided to fodder feed the animals, So fodder is a sprouted seed that they eat, by sprouting them it gives more nutrianal value equating to less feed. The seed costs about $1 a lb compared to $0.50 a lb but once sprouted provides more butrian for less $$$
