I read somewhere not to touch the CREE LED?
Heatsinking would be critical.
I can understand DIY for handheld flashlights but a weapon mounted one has different requirements. shock isolation etc.

I don't think touching the LED would hurt anything.

But you are correct, high power LED needs good heatsinking. LEDs are sensitive to heat and a poorly made one would burn itself out.

You also want good electronics. One that will manage the LED output to manage the heat as well as the safe draw from the battery. Cheap parts means a cheap flashlight. The assembly of the finished parts probably adds every little to the cost of the flashlight.

Ok, no laugh...but back in the day I used to run film projectors exactly like those in the picture below.
If a light bulb burned out, I had to change it.
Prior to installing the new bulb you had to wipe all grease and fingerprints from the bulb because the contamination on the glass could cause uneven expansion and contraction of the glass bulb when the filament fired up, which could cause stress fractures.

Perhaps that is the same reasoning behind the cree led warning

I also remember the same situation for the bulb in the projectors at school (AV nerd) and the halogen headlights bulbs.

@oldfart it uses one 18650 battery either non protected or protected.

@reyn not sure but i know people take of the dome and run the led without it and i accept your durability challenge beat down test in the planning.

A lot of the LEDs are covered by a silicone lens, that is the little bump you see. Some are glass I think but in arm my reading I have never heard it to be a problem.
