All flying machines have longitudinal (fore and aft) and some mostly fixed wing  aircraft have lateral (port and starboard) balance zones the center of gravity must be inside of those safe zones proper CG is critical to flight safety.

I worked for Hawaiian Airlines for 20 years and used to do the weight and balance manifesting for the DC9s they flew back then.  If we had a light passenger load, we would have the flight attendants have all the passengers sit toward the front.  Even then we sometimes had to load up to 3000 lbs of ballast in the forward luggage compartment.

I flew the MD90 with the stretchered cabin  it also had the same problem but used less ballast. Most bag filled the fore compartment.  But an aft CG saves more fuel.

Weight discrimination is legal. It is also fair. I have been saying for some time that airlines should charge a passenger for the entire weight they bring on the plane. Maybe some sort of base price plus so much for every pound, including baggage.

Sure, me at 220 would cost more but my kids would cost a lot less. Why should my kids ticket price be subsidized for some fat dude who wants to carry a bunch of extra weight on the plane?

Airplane ticket prices might be a good incentive to lose weight!
