Just saw this on the news

Was there ever any follow up information for the previous incidents at Koko Villas and with the van at or near Sandy Beach?

Is there a way to request more information?  Investigations must have been completed by now?

Could it be possible someone cleaning their gun mistakenly discharged a round by accident.  Wonder if HPD went through their registry to see if any guns are registered in the Koko Villas or Queens Gate area and knocked on a few doors of registered gun owners.

Is Harvey trying to get the range shut down ?

"Crews added sand and dirt in the berm behind the targets to help absorb bullets. An “eyebrow” cover was installed, which is essentially an awning meant to discourage shooters to fire at a high angle. All targets beyond 100 yards were eliminated.

But Gerwig says it wasn’t enough.

The Hawaii Rifle Association actually brought in a national expert to give some tips on how to make the firing range safer, but we’re told the city never followed those suggestions."

That could be expanded to include every firearm owner that visited the range in March. People are forgetting the criminal element. They should also be investigating reports of gun fire that are not during range hours. If I remember there were some reports of gunfire around Sandy Beach during after hours.
Not sure what message Gerwig was trying to convey but it doesn't paint the range community in a good light

Trying to get action on range improvement more likely. Everything said there is true.

Might be an opertunity to spring that range petition into action?

A loud bang? Maybe just me but I don't think the bullet alone would produce a large bang entering the home.

Ok - what day and what time? Also what caliber of the bullet and what angle of initial entry? Wouldn't a bullet going over koko head have a downward trajectory and not a flat trajectory causing it to strike the roof and not a vertical wall?

it would take a tremendous amount of energy/velocity to penetrate the wall at that angle, and ricochet off of the table and then lodge up in the wall above the patio door

I found the house that got hit and ran calculations for the bullet trajectory.  It could have come from the range and a bullet caliber around 7.62x39 fired at about 15 to 20 degrees high could clear the crater and hit with enough force to penetrate the wall and deflect off the table, equivelant to a 9mm at 1/3rd velocity.

The safety improvements the NRA suggested wouldn't have stopped this since it couldn't be a ricochet off the backstop.  We would need overhead baffles which can stop bullets and training for shooters to help prevent negligent discharges.  This is why the Koko Head petition is so important as these incidents can permanently shut down the range.  However I have found very little interest from the shooting community on signing and helping to volunteer with the Koko Head improvement petition which is really needed.

Sign the petition and encourage your family and friends to do so too.  I need about 3800 more signatures.

highly unlikely

I understand the need for improvements but all this talk of could have happened etc. is not painting the range users in a positive light.
A person who is not a stakeholder in the range can easily say shut the range down even if the round did not originate from the range. While the media is investigating stray rounds from the range they should be investigating any reports of gunfire in and around the areas of Hawaii Kai.
Get ready for more Greg Knudsen appearances at the range with his camera.
Fed up with a 100 yard only range? Imagine if they got rid of the rifle range altogether.
More rules are coming whether this round came from the range or not. Just like how firearms laws are passed.

Because of the location and direction of the bullet hit and angle, it could have only been fired from either Hanauma Bay, vicinity of the range, sewage plant, top of Koko Crater, or the neighbors roof

Funny thing, ended up running into Mayor Caldwell on Tuesday.

We talked about the range, and he told me he thought it would be a "Good idea" if a "Private entity took over running the range". Not sure if that means a deal has been made, or if he was just fishing. I am sure the city would like to get away from the liability situations like this create.
