Gun control vs. Fireworks control
« on: December 31, 2016, 05:12:42 PM »
Disclaimer: I'm not a fireworks hater, I enjoy them, I'm just stating an observation.

Fireworks are illegal in Hawaii, however ever year since the law was passed it still sounds like WW3 outside.  Also I'm not aware of any secret factories making the fireworks in the state so the only way they could be coming in throughout the year is through the freighter process.  My point is that even with an almost complete ban on fireworks, they are still coming in and people are still firing them off and sometimes getting injured.  Using the gun control argument, shouldn't there me more laws if it keeps happening?

Gun control is the same.  With hundreds of laws in place around the world involving firearms, crimes are still committed with them and people somehow get them when they are barred from owning them legally.  Countries and states seek to add even more laws each time something happens.

Doesn't matter how many laws there are.  People will always disregard the law and get what they want.

Don't forget "drug control". There's a resounding success for you... starting with "Prohibition", which was such a good idea they even managed to amend the Constitution.

common excuses are "tradition", "culture"
laws are only good if the society follows them. Once society disregards laws then there are underling ills that rules, laws, regs can't touch. We tend to believe that if there is a law in place then that behavior is controlled. Illegal fireworks is a good example of failed laws and lax enforcement. The current legislature believes that more laws would warrant less of that particular activity. Once an event transpires there's always calls to "we got to do more" . There are many options besides passing more laws. Investing in education. Prioritizing long term goals over greed and band aid solutions. Do our legislators have that foresight or is it led by $$$.
I'm listening to my neighbors launch illegal aerials. Nothing but loud booms. Thats it.
Wonder what would happen if CRAM was in place.
I bet firearms laws are more enforced than illegal fireworks. Are there active inspections of cargo at SPODs and APODs? 100% inspection? Not practical at all. I think there is more behind the scenes than what we think.

Makes you wonder, huh?!? I live in Mililani and two neighbors, on opposite sides of the block, are launching aerials and some actually shake my house. Me thinks some palms are greased very well!  :shake: :shaka: :geekdanc:

Happy New Year
On the flip side. Tonight is a display of how much these laws have on illegal fireworks. Little to none on the importation or use of aerial fireworks.
Gee I wonder how laws against illicit drugs are

Maybe they should require all fireworks permit purchasers be enrolled in rapback.  That would solve things, no?

My area had more aerials than last year.   I have always been for no restrictions on guns or fireworks but  support strict penalties for use before and after the stated time.  Catch some to make an example of.

Still coming from the same areas and lots of new areas in the valley.   Saw lots of lightning type flashes coming from the next valley over (Hahaione?) around midnight.
I must not be in the loop, didn't know someone was selling close to me, not that I would buy

Check this comment on Hawaii News Now facebook:

So there was one incident out of thousands of party goers? Sad for the family but this seriously isn't news and it certainly shouldn't be used as propaganda to support a ban that clearly no one obeys.

Oh really?  You mean what happens after every shooting incident and gun control!  Those laws that criminals don't obey?  The few people out of millions of gun owners?

I guess lawmakers would respond by pointing out that there were fewer fireworks after the ban than before it and argue that in the case of guns at least there would be fewer even if they couldn't completely get rid of them.

But I still think this is worthy to point out.

I got a friend that works down at the pier, he said when containers of fireworks come in,  everyone knows.  You can smell it in the air.   You could just use your nose to figure out which containers.
I asked if they ever get stopped or anything,  and he just said don't fuck with them.

Didn't look like fewer in Waipahu and Ewa Beach.  Since the ban there may be fewer of the "legal" type such as string crackers and novelties.  However, the "illegal" type such as aerials and bombs have spiked.  IMHO, because of laws it has made the situation MORE dangerous for the general public, which is usually the case no matter what the subject matter is.

lawmakers should take a year enforcing the laws they make every odd or even numbered year.
cuz the laws they pass aren't working
amazing to see what lengths we go to get these aerials.
went to Walmart and they didn't have, nor did DQ and City Mill...boo
