You could get an 1858 Remington 44 pistol (all steel) then buy the conversion cylinder that will allow you to shoot smokless cartridge 45 Colt CAS (low power fodder). Bummer is the shotgun and rifle though....

If you get a cartridge conversion you'll have to register them as a pistol before you install the cylinders.

Instead getting repos why not get the real things? You know, made before 1898. Then no worries. Just saying....

I've seen the SASH guys shoot and it looks super fun!  Especially the lever action part.  That and they seem to shoot steel often, which I love!

When I lived in WA, I wanted a decent SA revolver and lever gun combo.  Always been interested in those, but never got around to getting that combination.  Ended up getting a S&W 686 plus a few years ago, but never picked up the lever action to go with it.  Seems like the availability on lever actions, or at least the ones that I had my eye on, really went down during that time.  And now RapBack. . . so I feel ya.

What kinds of guns have you considered so far?

Nice.  Those Ruger vaqueros are pretty nice!  I always wanted a Colt SAA.  But yeah, at around $1500+, probably not any time soon. . .

I originally really wanted a Winchester, but was looking for a Marlin in .357/.38. The Henry's and Uberti are also tempting as well.  Have some other things going on right now that are taking up my time and attention, so haven't seriously considered buying anything.  I still think these guns are very cool and will eventually get them one day. . .

I've got a pair of Rugr Blackhawks and a WInchester 94AE, all in .357. I had a double barrel WInchester 12ga, but I never could shoot well with it and sold it. Anyway, I was going to get into CAS, but actually lost my interest because of the costuming requirement.

Hopefully I don't have to go all out on costume or I would lose interest as well especially during summer months lol

The clothing is required?  While cool and all, that would probably prevent me from participating.  The guns, holsters, ammo, etc would be expensive enough, let alone a Stetson.

While many have some sort of "cowboy" dress, I thought not all of them had.  Maybe some were spectators and not participants.  I would think that they would be open to having "plain clothes" competitors.  I can see how the dress definitely makes it fun for some as that is part of the game.  Just like the jerseys and other gear that IPCS/USPSA shooters use to express themselves.

Out of all the action gun sports this is the one that piqued my interest the most.  But like drck, the cost to get into it is really the breaker.  If I could afford, I would.

I'm planning on having a event where my group shoots with the SASH and tries it for a day.  They said they'll help us out as long as we bring ammo.

Quote from: from the SASS Shooter's Handbook
CLOTHING AND ACCOUTERMENTS
Cowboy Action ShootingTM is a combination of historical reenactment and Saturday morning at the matinee. Participants may choose the style of costume they wish to wear, but all clothing must be typical of the late 19th century, a B-western movie, or Western television series.
SASS puts a great deal of emphasis on costuming because it adds so much to the uniqueness of our game and helps create a festive, informal atmosphere that supports the friendly, fraternal feeling we encourage in our competitors.
All shooters must be in costume, and we encourage invited guests and family also to be costumed. Shooters must remain in costume at all match events: dinners, award ceremonies, dances, etcetera.
ALL clothing and equipment MUST be worn appropriately, how it was intended and how it would have been worn in the OLD WEST or as seen on B-Western movies and television.
The difference between theory and reality is that, in theory, there is no difference between theory and reality.

My friend will be at the SASH meet. He shoots with us every Sunday except the SASH meets. He is the most knowledgable person I know about old and historic arms. His nickname is Stone Deaf.

One of my best friends on the mainland is a member of SAS and shoots at the senior games every year. His nickname is One Ton. I am sure you can figure out why.

If you do join them you will need a nickname. What will your nickname be?
