Favorite semi-auto .308?
« on: January 12, 2010, 07:06:27 AM »
Does anyone have any experience with semi-automatic .308 rifles? If so, what are your favorites and what are the pros and cons of each?

I have looked in to the DPMS lr-308 and it looks like a pretty good base. MOA or better, not too heavy, accepts Magpul PMags. There is also a pretty positive review on Sniper Central. There is also the ever popular M1A, but that is quite a bit more expensive and doesn't have a pistol grip that a lot of people like.

I've owned both rifles, an Armalite AR-10 and a M1A.  In the end I sold them both to get a bolt gun.  Of the two i did prefer the AR-10 just because all the admin duties, i.e. loading, chamber check, malfunction clearing were all the same as the AR-15.  My preference is no doubt a reflection of what I was comfortable with.

If I were in the market, I'd go with the M1A.  Largely, my choice would be based on personal preference.  I like wood stocks, I dislike pistol grips, and am intimately familiar with the operating system of the Garand, which has a lot of similarity with the M1A.

Actually, the only reason I don't own an M1A is that it is .308.  I don't really want to have to start stockpiling ammunition for yet another rifle caliber!  If they made the M1A in .30-06, I'd already have 2.

I got to hold the 18" bull barrel DPMS today. It was surprisingly lighter than I thought it would be. I also got to hold a Remington 700P which was surprisingly heavier than I thought it would be.

As for the caliber, I don't have any long range calibers yet so I decided something with a lot of store availability.
