stabbing three people was shot to death by Los Angeles police in a fast food restaurant in Hollywood officials said.
The knife attack was reported about 2 p.m. near Sunset Boulevard and Ivar Avenue, said Sgt. Barry Montgomery, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department.
When officers arrived, they saw the man standing outside Jack in the Box, said Sgt. Frank Preciado. He went back inside, where he was shot by police.
The man died at the scene. Police are still trying to identify him and
determine the motive for the attacks, he said.
All three suffered stab wounds and were taken to hospitals.
Two were listed in critical condition, police said, and the other had injuries described as "non-life-threatening."
Aerial television video showed police taping off an area surrounding the restaurant. At least two ambulances and a half-dozen police cruisers were at the scene.
CNN correspondent Maeve Reston, a former Los Angeles Times reporter, tweeted that the suspect ran down Sunset Boulevard and tried to stab people across from the CNN office. The office, she said, had been placed on lock down.
She said he was
armed with a knife and tried to enter a coffee shop, but a customer held the glass door shut and blocked him.
A video posted on social media by a witness showed the frantic moments inside the fast food restaurant after the stabbing.
A person could be heard calling for a belt or shoelace to be used as a tourniquet for a victim sitting in a chair with a pool of blood at their feet.
“You’re going to be fine,” a person said.
Two people could be seen tying a belt onto the victim’s bloodied arm.
Moans could be heard in the video.
As an officer reports “shots fired,” another officer can be seen kneeling over a person lying face down on the ground and holding the person’s arm.
