New Resident--Question on Shipping the Rest of my Guns Here
« on: February 01, 2017, 02:56:48 PM »
Moved here a couple months ago, and only had room to ship a few things. I left the rest on the mainland in the care of a trusted individual.

-When I registered my current HI guns when I arrived, they required a bill of lading from the carrier, or a plane ticket stub and firearms baggage check tag in order to prove how the guns arrived.

-According to the ATF, an unlicensed (non-FFL) individual can legally ship firearms across state lines from themselves--to themselves.

6. May I lawfully ship a firearm to myself in a different State?
Any person may ship a firearm to himself or herself in the care of another person in the State where he or she intends to hunt or engage in any other lawful activity. The package should be addressed to the owner “in the care of” the out-of-State resident. Upon reaching its destination, persons other than the owner must not open the package or take possession of the firearm.

-At some point in the future, I plan on returning to my cache and retrieving the rest of my stuff.  Do I have to have it sent to an FFL here, or can I just ship to myself and register within the 5 days?  Anyone ever do this?

Mahalo in advance.

There is nothing in the state law that requires you to show proof of how you got your personally owned firearms from the mainland to here upon registration. HPD likes to make up there own requirements on-the-fly. I mailed a bunch of my firearms from CA to here back in 2014 and just told them it was an out-of-state registration and that I mailed them to myself per those same ATF guidelines you posted. They didn't ask for any proof of how I brought them into state nor did I offer them any (no shipper will indicate firearms on the package and/or label for safety reasons).

In 2014, I loaded my rifles and pistol into Uhaul shipping containers. When I moved to Hawaii, I had the containers shipped here. I brought them into HPD. Explained that I'm new in town but I don't remember what I brought in with me for documentation. I don't remember it being a big deal including the pistol. I still had to wait the two weeks to get the permit but kept my firearms in the meantime. Not sure exactly what would happen if I failed the background.

Why would you ship them if your going to get them, Just take them on the plane with you.......  THERE IS NO REQUIREMENT FOR A BILL OF LANDING OR PLANE TICKET. TELL THEM TO FUCK OFF.

You dont need a permit to register your own pistols either, IF THEY SAY YOU DO, TELL THEM TO FUCK OFF.

I would far exceed the allowable number of firearms you can carry on a plane at one time.  ;)

I'm on Kauai, and no one said I needed a permit before registering a handgun.  Only issue was I was past the 3 or 5 (seen it both ways) calendar day time requirement when I went in. My container arrived the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, and I couldn't get my guns in until the following Monday.  I would have registered ASAP, but the firearms section was closed for 4 days over the holiday weekend. The clerk on the phone gave me a hard time, but couldn't tell me what I could have done differently.

It's an odd learning curve here. I was a police officer for years on the mainland, and the laws here seem to be geared more toward jamming people up, rather than making it clear what the proper conduct should be.

Theres a limit to the number of guns you can bring ? There might be a charge for baggage but ive never heard of a limit.

"the firearms section was closed for 4 days over the holiday weekend. "  Untill the firearms were in your possession they are not in the state. If i send you a package and the post office still has it, its still in transit. Technically until you open the package its also still in transit.

the permit thing was for rklapp, just got rolled into one reply,

A few months and you have already realized that the laws are only in place to jam up law abiding citizrns, Your ahead of the curve compared to most. You will find that all the PD's make shit up and have no clue what they are doing. You have 2 choices, Go along to get along or call them on their bullshit.

I've heard about the "don't open the box" rule for other products as well...
