And in the realm of handgun proficiency, you get what you paid for!  :)

I'd suggest a good handgun course you pay for versus a hunter education course.  Hands-on live-fire instruction is better than merely classroom lecture.

Yes, HPD accepts a hunter's ed certificate just like an NRA certified, state qualified hands-on course.  Don't try to make sense of it.  You'll fail!  :D

All the more reason to go for better training.  Hunter's ed is okay for people who are already experienced gun owners or only intend to hunt.

If you want to go to the range regularly and be able to use a handgun for self defense ever, take a good handgun course and practice often.

When safety is the goal, there's no such thing as "too much training".

I'll have a weekday class for $75.  I've been doing the 6+2 hour class over 2 days.  I don't have a date yet, but looking at Feb 21-24 timeframe.

If you complete the HE course and pass the test you'll qualify to acquire a handgun. The firearms portion is really a joke. No hands on, no range time and often taught by non NRA certified instructors. I used t be a Master Instructor in the HE program for 20 years and a cert NRA  instructor but quit over a disagreement about the firearms section of the curriculum. I wanted it removed from the program since it really taught nothing. Take a hands on course. No matter how much you think you know, you'll learn something new. Well worth the money. Hell I continue to learn stuff here on 2a. The knowledge base is fantastic and the folks are great! .... good luck  :shaka:

As a side benefit, the handgun courses normally offer a variety of calibers and styles of firearms to shoot.  You'll learn the basic operations of semi-autos, revolvers -- both single action and double action.  You'll get to feel the recoil of different calibers and get an idea of how they differ in weight, grip size, and overall ergonomics.

All of that is invaluable when you decide to purchase a handgun.  Just holding a Glock in the gun store isn't going to give you the same information.

Having taken the HE recently and being an NRA instructor, I agree with the statements about the lack of handgun safety and handling in the HE course. I help friends with their certs as well as volunteer with a group that does the classes and the safe handling is something that is important. Particularly with many who feel that they've "been there, done that".

As mentioned above, the chance to handle and shoot a variety of handguns is great as well. Not much opportunity to try before you buy here. Handguns are very much personal preference.

I thoroughly enjoyed the HE course, but it was more for the lessons on species, habitat, conservation, etc. Safe gun handling was def not their strong suit. I'll just leave it at that.

If they never got trained in how to shoot a pistol correctly, they should take a pistol course over the hunters ed.  I'd be concerned about safety if HE is the only training they got.
