Hawaiian pidgeon is interesting. While the current Hawaiian language is actually a missionized version of the old language - sort of like Hawaiian words with some different meanings and anglicized grammar - pidgeon is kind of like english words with some different meanings and hawaiian grammar.

One account I heard of the word "Mok" is that it comes from the word for King, mo'i. That ' means a hard stop so mo'i sounds a little like moki - no real equivalent sound in english. Anyway, its a tongue in cheek reference to "that fat fuck that doesn't do anything except act mean." The Ali'i were actually an invading force and not at all universally adored the way their descendants (who control the field of Hawaiian Studies) claim these days. They had slaves that did all the work and all they did, pretty much, was politics, eat other people's food and fight - according to the descendants of the people who they were trying to conquer. "Mok" is a surviving reference to the disdain the commoners had for the "royalty" and those who act like them.

My favorite use of the word Mok? The sign down at Tex's in Honokaa that has the "s" scratched out so that it read "Thank You for Not Moking."

This video was helpful for me when I first got to the island.  I reference it once in a while, since sometimes I have no idea if the guy I'm talking to is trying to pick a fight with me, or express his passionate feelings against SOPA.  I usually end up smiling and nodding awkwardly, and eventually the problem solves itself.     I am getting better at understanding pidgin nowadays, though.
