Glasses may get banned at Boston bars after assaults

Following a string of local bar assaults involving glassware, the city’s Liquor Licensing Board is moving to crack down on establishments where patrons have suffered injuries related to glasses holding drinks. Watering holes with repeat offenses could have to use plastic barware in lieu of the real deal — no matter how upscale the joint.

“If we see a pattern of glass as a weapon it will no longer be allowed,” Christine Puglini, the board’s chairwoman, said at a hearing yesterday.

Puglini said the board was mulling harsh measures, including outright barring establishments with repeat offenses from serving drinks in glasses.

“It’s concerning to the board that all these assaults are happening with glasses. It’s something the board is going to discuss and perhaps put a plan in place in the near future,” Puglini said. “The board’s not going to tolerate it — if this is happening, the board won’t allow glasses.”

Michael Anthony, general manager at Townsman, using the old trope about guns, says glasses don’t hurt people — drunk people hurt people.

“It makes no sense to offer a legal drug — alcohol — and blame the outcome on packaging,” he said, equating banning glassware from bars to taking the tires off cars to prevent them from driving and causing accidents. “That’s just asinine.”

“So we’re also going to ban forks, knives, fruitcakes and all items that could cause bodily harm, right?” Anthony asked rhetorically — and facetiously.
