I pretty much keep my political beliefs to myself unless I am around people I know. I am not as strong and young as I used to be. When I was younger I would not let a good chance go by to let people know how much I agreed or disagreed with the current president. Now I just keep my mouth shut because I cannot defend myself like I used to.

Today I was wearing my cap with Velcro on it. On the front I have a patch with the coiled snake and it says "Don't Tread on Me.". I walked up to the cashier who is a very delightful and attractive young woman (probably mid 20's, filipina) who I speak to all the time. I put down my poke bowl and beers like I always do. But this time there was another employee standing there with her bagging my purchase. He says to me he recognizes the patch on my hat. At first I was not sure what he was talking about as I had momentarily forgotten which cap I was wearing today. When he said that I tensed up expecting to have to defend myself against a Trump hater. Then he says to me "I loved the president's speech the other night". My jaw just dropped. He couldn't have been more than 30 or so. And I was really taken aback. I said a few things about how I really liked it too when all of the sudden the cashier piped up with things like "I like Trump". "I wish people would just give him a chance to prove himself".

Be honest I just about lost it. Not only am I talking conservative politics with someone who I interact with several times a week. But it just blew me away that she was interested in politics and knew what she was talking about. And she voted!!!! 

Who knew there are Gen-Xers in Hawaii that voted for and care about Trump and conservatism? Maybe there is hope after all...

Your talking about the Silent Majority. The problem is they either dont understand how to initiate a change or are scared of being shouted down by the other side.

Wait for Gen Z they are least liberal generation since the baby boomers.

I generally avoid talking politics or religion face to face, but I guess I am quite the opposite in that when pressed on the topic, I am not afraid to voice my opinions no matter what anyone else may think.  Speaking my mind when asked or pressed for an opinion has been something I have done that my entire life and as an adult throughout my career, even if it has conflicted with my own employer and put me at odds with the higher ups.  Getting older has only made my convictions even stronger.  I do understand where you are coming from however and if anyone gives you crap over your hat, I'll grab mine and join you!

I was really taken aback by their candid comments that were in support of Trump. I work with an interesting mix of locals and haoles. The haoles are mostly conservative and the locals not. However when a conversation breaks out it becomes obvious the locals are not well informed. Not saying they are wrong just not completely informed enough to have a deep conversation with those that are well informed. So to talk to these locals at the market that are younger, well informed and wanting to support our president was just surprisingly pleasant.

I hate politics and religion, so I rarely talk about them.  I'll usually talk about with SUPER close friends, but usually still on a casual level.  I'll discuss if people take a genuine interest in what I think and have an open mind.  If they are close minded, I'll typically say some, but not much.  Not worth my time or headache.  Politics comes up occasionally at lunch where I work and most of the people who bring it up are Dems, hate Trump, etc.  I usually just keep out of that, but will occasionally point out the folly in their logic.  Though I usually tend to bite my tongue as when people believe certain things and don't really know why they believe so, you're never going to convince them otherwise.  They know what they know, don't confuse them with the facts. 

Sometimes I want to jump in and discuss, though I admit that I'm pretty terrible at being up-to-date on many current topics with regards to politics.  I don't want to go off half cocked and my arguments be based on bad information or even worse, my misunderstanding of said information.  That said, that doesn't stop the Dems & I Hate Trumps from spewing all sorts of crap. 

Glad to hear of your pleasant experience!  Hope to hear more.  I have friends who have gun logos, Molon Labe, etc clothing and all over their car and stuff.  I generally tend to stay low key.  That said, I have noticed more and more that it seems like there are quite a number of people silently or quietly riding the tide away from blue to red. 

Makes me want to go out and buy a trump and anti-trump hat and wear it around to see peoples reactions.

Wore my "Hillary for Prison 2016" shirt a few times and the only time I got a reaction was walking into SEC and one of the workers acknowledged it. Other than a few people doing a "double take" to see what the shirt actually said, really nothing.

I honestly think Hawaii folks are too "dense" politically and the minority are the pro or anti Trump ppl we see on social media. Aside from the "Womens Rally" in Waikiki, when do Hawaii folks even show any mass interest or passion with any political matters? And that "Woman's March" thing was only done IMHO in the same manner most Hawaii people do ... cause it was a "thing" all over media.

Im 34 and a lot of my friends that lean "left" heavily back during our "college days" are more open to “conservative” or “libertarian” views. Some have even gone full blown extreme “right”, but I think it goes to show that “liberalism” is really something truly meant for the naïve, spoiled, and immature. None of us are filthy rich or come from a “white collar” family, majority of my friends are either from single parent homes and now parents themselves, married, etc… hard working stiffs from some in the military locally and others in the work of construction, management positions, etc..

I think the key to seeing if people are really moving away from the blue to the red will be in two years at the next election. We'll see.....

We have "color the oval" ballots.  Nobody in the booth yelling, "Come on, Jackpot!"   

The great thing about Trump is that he's sweeping the fake left establishment Democrats out of the way. What we need is a real Socialist party who actually does something for the working class, and hopefully labor can begin to organize itself again when Trump turns out to be just another con artist.

My daughter and son-inlaw and lots of their friends voted for Trump.   Many young local evangelicals all voted for DJT.  Friend's son in VA voted for Trump and just went to his first gun show at Hampton VA last year.
