Delta Implements New Rule For Guns in Checked Bags

Quote
The airline will now have special tags to alert ground handlers to not put bags carrying weapons on the general carousel.

The baggage will go directly to a baggage service agent who is required to perform an ID check on the passenger who picks up
the luggage, sources told NBC 6. The agent must then use zip ties to secure the bag.

A police officer will be at the location when the passenger picks up the baggage. Aviation consultant Scott Patterson said this will
add another level of security.

“Now, there's a police presence there when there's a weapon that's checked and the police officer can monitor the weapon leave
the building satisfactorily,” said Patterson.

Will the officer follow the passenger into the restroom and watch to make sure he doesn't cut the zip-tie?

Could get crazy if there's a #2 emergency!

I have had airlines leave my Firearms unmonitored in the open or on the carousel with the special tags.

I had a bag with a locked gun case get delayed for almost a day.  The airline said they'd deliver it to the place I was staying that evening.

The delivery guy showed up after 12 midnight.  I was still awake, but I guess he decided to leave it by the backdoor and not knock since it was so late.

I opened the backdoor to let the dog out, and there was my suitcase!

Wasn't very happy with my firearm sitting outside the house and no call or knock.  Glad I found it relatively soon after it was left.

Anyway, I wonder how this new system will work for delayed luggage?  In my example, the delivery guy would know about the firearm.  He could replace the zip tie, and no one would know he took the gun.

When I fly with firearms I separate parts and disable it.  If stolen it's useless unless they want to spend money to buy the parts to make it function.

It violates federal law.

I was thinking the same thing.  I understand what the airlines is trying to accomplish but visually tagging is not allowed. ???

While this is illegal and wrong.  Would be a great idea to tag all my bags like this.  Then I know they can't get lost or stolen!  More security for my items.

I don't mind that my luggage can't just be taken by anyone from the carousel and that they ask me for my ID to get my luggage at the baggage office. It's now less likely that my luggage will get stolen.

I've always thought that obvious rifle cases on the open carousel with no one around was a bad stolen luggage incident waiting to happen.

I put a nail clipper on the outside pocket of my suitcase. As soon as I retrieve my bag from the baggage office, I take it outside the building, cut the cable ties with the clipper and remove the CAGPT tag (Care And Give Protection To) from the luggage so it doesn't scream "weapon inside".
I think, therefore I am armed.

I may fly Delta soon so I emailed them to make them aware.

I know they enter into the passenger info that I declared a firearm and/or ammo.  United makes me stand at the check-in for 10 minutes in case the baggage handlers have any questions or need to open the case.  So that bag is obviously flagged in the computer.

My solution might sound crazy, but why not have every passenger file through a baggage claim exit?  Airport security can then match each baggage tag to each claim receipt.  If they scan each tag to record it was claimed, the computer can alert to a firearm, and they can throw a zip tie on the bag as it leaves with the owner.  Think of all the benefits of making sure only the owners can claim bags!

This is actually very reasonable. Not sure why we even have the take your bag off a belt system. "We trust you."

I swear I remember a long long long time ago when that was the exact procedure at LAX. You picked your bag from the carousel and two people worked the single exit door checking people's claim tags against the baggage tags. One day they just weren't there checking any more. I'm guessing it was either too costly to employ those people or they got too many complaints about delays getting out the baggage area. Another possibility is that I've created a memory that wasn't...

I recall there used to be someone checking baggage claim tags at HNL.  But it wasn't like they were checking everyone.

I've been to WA, AK, OR, NV, AZ and some others with my guns and the ONLY place that my gun cases came out on the main baggage area was at HNL.  All others, I had to claim them at the airline's baggage customer service counter, where you usually go to claim damage to baggage, lost baggage etc.  Seemed pretty typical for every place except HNL.

In terms of airline counter folks checking in baggage, I've also found that HNL's personnel aren't the best with knowing the rules and regulations.  That's why I always carry a copy of TSA and the specific airline's policy with me.  I've had numerous United agents tell me different things.  That I had to have TSA locks.  That the gun needed to be disassembled.  Then I've also had one that just told me to fill out the card and toss it in the case without even so much as looking at my gun case.
