This state and city created this lack of affordable housing with it's policies of driving up the cost of living. It's like when they interview Ann Kobayashi Manoa councilwoman about any subject. She always mumbles and claims she doesn't know anything and says we have to find out.
It's like Brandon Elefante pushes a more drastic bag ban to start charging people for a bag to put their bought items in. Only in Honolulu do you have sales clerks look horrified when you ask for a bag. It's like when the state want to increase the gas tax, maybe to mimic the PR Kali who recently raised it to .12/gal.
It's like when then Mayor Fasi proposed banning foreigners from purchasing land in Hawaii and was called a bigot. It's every feel good and BS common sense law passed by the state and city to make this place too expensive for normal law abiding people to live in. It's like when democrats torpedoed the HI Superferry that would have increased interisland business which would also have been a boon to local farmers and small businesses.
It's like when you now have to pay $42 to basically put yourself on a criminal data base or car registrations get increased and they don't want to eliminate safety checks.
So, I like laugh at the shibai concerns about the people and cost of living.
Everything you said is true, plus ....
Japanese buyers drove up prices in the late 80s/early 90s having a major impact on the market. On top of that, the military housing allowances were increased to keep up with the property value increases, meaning landlords could charge the max for military member's BAQ, which drives up rental rates for everyone.
I know one person who had a knock on the door one Sunday as he was reading the newspaper. It was a realtor. He said he had a Japanese client in the car and were looking at homes in the area. The client was very taken with this house and wanted to know how much it would sell for. The owner told the realtor, "This house isn't on the market."
The realtor said, "Well, if you could name any price, what would you take for it?" He mentioned a figure $100,000 over what he thought would be the highest price he could ever get for it.
The client wrote a check for the full amount, and they closed 2 weeks later! He was renting when I talked to him until the house he was having built new was ready!
Crazy!
