I'd like to see the whole story behind this.  Is he a homeless guy?  I've said it before, homeless people have the right to armed self defense as anyone else, and it's not like he has a 'place to keep'.  Wouldn't want to leave your shotty in the tent while going out panhandling. Know what I mean..  that would be irresponsible.

A number of commentators believe the Caetano unanimous per curiam decision by SCOTUS vacating and remanding (in essence saying "You got this wrong, do it over according to Heller and McDonald) the MA Supreme Court ruling (that ruled (among other things) the ban on stun guns was legal because they didn't exist in 1791 when the Second Amendment was ratified) was in part due the "sympathetic nature" of the prosecuted individual (homeless minority woman) who wouldn't have been able to keep a stun gun in her (non-existent) home. The MA Supreme Court did not issue a new ruling overturning their previous one (now vacated by SCOTUS) because the state dropped all charges against Ms. Caetano, so there is still no ruling about the issue. And, Hawaii is a different state with different laws, but we all know our "public servants" will fight to the very end (using our tax dollars) to keep all citizens as disarmed as possible, especially in "public".

The Hawaii laws are absurd on their face. Take "place of sojourn" for instance. It's been "interpreted" to mean "the place you intend to spend the night". So I can take my firearm (unloaded in an enclosed container, of course) from my home to my girlfriend's house if I'm planning on spending the night, but if I'm on my way and she calls and says that the plan has changed and I will need to go home at the end of our evening together and spend the night at my place, that would mean that I'd have to turn my car around and take my firearm back to my house before returning to her place without it (otherwise I'm engaging in criminal activity), as her house would no longer be my "place of sojourn". Folks, you can't make this shit up... And they wonder why so many people disrespect "the law" and the people who make it up (politicians) and those who enforce it (cops and prosecutors)?

I think open carry of a short barrel shotgun should be allowed.  Not some I would do or recommend though.  A big problem we face is guns, and the gun community, aren't visible everyday.  The public grows distant from gun owners and eventually don't care if their banned or not.

Same thing with me.  When I first saw the video I thought the guy should be arrested.  But then I realized that people should be legally able to do this, including the homeless as long as they don't do anything bad.

Unfortunately, complacency, a busy work schedule or other "stuff" doesn't afford a regular family to ponder or take action on these issues.
Most of my friends are averse to talking about societal issues leaving it up to our elected politicians to decide whether their children can go to school in what ever gender clothes they feel like.
Another friend of mine had his home broken into and later in another incident had his tires slashed. The kid was caught because he took a selfie on my friend's child's iPad. A couple weeks later his tires were slashed. So a person armed with a knife was on his property. His reaction. A video surveillance system. He didn't want to hear about the fact that someone came to his home armed with a knife to do bad. He didn't want his wife to worry.
So in my small cosmos of a world, I surmise that Hawaii culture is that ignorance is bliss and this will remain as paradise in a snow globe.
The same politicians who think what is good for them pass on their liberal, fantasy, unicorn-whimsical mindset until reality bites the general population in the arse.

You the citizen are not allowed to carry a weapon - only the government. It is the law I recognize that but this video wouldn't be such a spectacle in a free state like Texas or Arizona - unless that person is doing something more than carrying.

Amen to that... I always say "we have met the enemy and they are us". We ( as in Hawaii) keep electing and recycling the same scumbags back in office time and time again. When are we going to learn? On another note, HPD needs to get their collective wings clipped. They have way too much power........

Yeah, when was the last time there was a big story about nothing bad happening in the 14 states where people can carry long guns and handguns openly or concealed in public without a government permission slip? I guess all those states NOT turning into the "wild west" with "blood in the streets" as people (don't) shoot each other over fender benders and traffic impoliteness isn't "newsworthy". Besides that puts the obvious lie to their lies, and they can't have any facts getting out.

I somewhat agree with your observation.
What I see in general, is that most people actually agree that bad things can happen to good people. And that they should have a viable means of self defense.
The problem is that these same people are too busy or uncomfortable to be bothered with any kind of precautionary actions.
Even something as simple as buying a can of pepper spray is too "radical"..

So when the sh..t hits the fan, they believe that 911 will rescue them.

I'm not sure how they arrested him like that.  They had witnesses describe a man with a shotgun, and found the guy matching the description.  But I'm not sure if they can do an arrest and search like that just based on a witnesses testimony.  If it is a wrongful arrest, then the evidence (shotgun) would be thrown out.

News said no arrest were made, but didnt mention anything about detaining the guy.

It's a detention (not free to leave) when police are pointing guns at you, yelling for you to stop, and searching you.

Now that I see the video again, I can see the barrel of the shotgun sticking out from his jacket so it was a good stop and search.  If he wasn't arrested and charged, then I'd assume it was an airsoft gun.  He could still be charged with a misdemeanor for that.
