Which rock tumbler
« on: April 15, 2017, 12:26:58 PM »
I'm looking at a wet tumbler with steel pins

I'm considering the lortone since they are small.  The 3lb model can do 1 lb of brass.  The 6 lb model can do 2 lbs of brass.   1lb is about 75 cases of 223.  That seems like a lot of brass

The larger  thumler tumbler can do 5 lbs of brass.

Any recommendations on which brand and size?

Ill probably get the lortone 6lb model unless I find used tumbler for cheap on eBay

I'll update after I get one and use it.

If you're interested, I have a NIB Thumler model B, 15# capacity.  Will throw in 5 new replacement belts.  $200 - PM if interested.

Tnx for the offer but I think that one is too big for my needs.   Even the 6lb lortone is probably more than I need since I only use a bolt gun

Glws!!

I had a bolt gun once a long time ago....
I have the Thumler tumbler and with water, brass and the weight of the pins I don't think that small Lortone one can handle.
If I had to do it all over again Id consider the Frankford Arsenal tumbler

I got the Frankford arsenal tumbler and am very satisfied with it...

WGS and Young Guns had a stockpile of those. After watching the videos, i decided that's too much work.

I compromised between just vibratory tumbling and wet tumbling with SS pins and went with an ultrasonic cleaner. It does not clean primer pockets as perfectly clean like the wet tumbler does. But truly this is the only compromise I see. I have found by keeping the brass as horizontal as possible the ultrasonic cleaner does clean the primer pockets acceptably to the point I don't have to do anything more to them. Otherwise, I am very happy with my ultrasonic cleaner.

This is what I use, and it works great. However the plastic belt will go in a few months, no biggie, replacements a few bucks. If you want new/shiny looking brass this is the way to go.

I've had the 15 # thumbler with SS media for a couple of years,
Same belt, but should probably get a backup.
Works so good, my friends drop off their brass !

I have a small ultrasonic cleaner, and I find it cleans the pockets well if I have them upright but that's probably because of the smaller pan. I later tumble them in corn cob overnight. Shiny brass is nice but it doesn't help with accuracy much.

Sure it's shiney enough to drink wine from but does it help me be a more accurate shooter?

Confidence helps improve accuracy.

Well maintained shooting gear and good ammo increase confidence.  One less thing to worry about.  :)

Sometimes I believe that a clean car will run better than a dirty car. I guess the same could apply here. Doesn't mean I'm willing to put my car in a wet tumbler but an ultrasonic bath would be cool.
