Republican Hypocrites Advocate Censorship... Unless You Pay Them (Read 17514 times)

So the Republicans don't want people to be able to do something that they assert has truly horrific consequences... unless you pay them a fee, and then: help yourself! More "small government" "personal freedom and liberty" legislation from our Republican hypocrites politicians.

The Hypocritical Logic Behind Republican Plans to Ban Online Porn (Unless You Pay $20)
State lawmakers say porn is a public health crisis that causes rape and sex trafficking—but watch all you want as long as the state gets a cut.

http://reason.com/blog/2017/04/11/state-republicans-push-porn-filters

Excerpts:

Draft bills in at least 13 state legislatures would require all internet-enabled devices to come installed with an anti-porn filter, which adult consumers could choose to have removed for a fee of $20. They're calling it the Human Trafficking Prevention Act.

But of course it's not only monetary costs to consumers that are are a concern. The porn-filter proposal would also impose costs on product makers, and even steeper costs on U.S. civil liberties. "The way it's written, it would cover your router. It would cover your modem," said Electronic Frontier Foundation researcher Dave Maass. "Plus, now Best Buy is sitting on a database of people who wanted their porn filters removed."

And then there's question of how the filters would decide what is and isn't porn—content filters designed to catch explicit content have historically been harsh on all sorts of sexuality-related content, from educational websites to news to art.

Conservative lawmakers seem to support anti-porn proposals like this one because they please certain segments of their electoral base, give people easy fodder against lawmakers who vote in opposition (how does it look at a glance to be against the Human Trafficking Prevention Act?), and aren't generally a political dealbreaker for those who oppose the plans.

This justification might make sense if the idea was simply a tax on porn consumers. But the porn-filter bill is explicitly packaged as a response to porn being a "public health hazard" and "cancer on society" that "perpetuates a sexually toxic environment" in America, normalizes violence against women and children, "portrays rape and abuse as if such acts are harmless," promotes "problematic or harmful sexual behaviors," and "increases the demand for sex trafficking, prostitution, child sexual abuse images, and child pornography."

If Republican lawmakers really believe that online pornography is a public health crisis that directly contributes to human trafficking, isn't $20 to access an unlimited quantity of it a bit low? Why shouldn't such a scourge just be banned entirely? Much like liberal counterparts who declare Donald Trump a fascist/Nazi/white supremacist and themselves the #Resistance and then demand more government control of broadcast media, arts funding, etc., conservative lawmakers demonstrate an extreme dissonance of rhetoric and response here. It leaves open three possibilities:

Republicans really believe that internet porn is a public health crisis that ruins relationships and directly leads to human trafficking—and also that paying $20 absolves one of moral responsibility for such matters.

Republicans believe porn is a public health crisis that causes sexual exploitation and the $20 fee proposal is just a ploy to get the law passed and filtering mechanisms in place with minimal objection, after which it will be much easier to mandate a fee increase or make it a crime to override the filter.

Republicans don't actually believe that porn is a public health crisis that causes human trafficking.

Take your pick.

OK PP I'll agree with you on this one.

But to me, it's more like building a  data base  for gun registration / confiscation or Rapback for  "potential"  sex criminals.

Well, that's not what they say. in fact they outrightly deny that. So you're asserting that these Republicans are not only hypocrites but liars, right?

If you go to the link of all the legislators that support this totalitarian idiocy subterfuge you will note that Hawaii does not have any politicians listed as introducing a bill, and also is the only state that has no pending bill first draft. I guess it's like with the "Second Amendment rights" organizations that won't spend a dime to help us out here with our draconian unconstitutional laws... too small potatoes... so, who cares what they do in Hawaii? Not even worth trying to get an unconstitutional "conservative" "prior restraint" bill through the Dem legislature. Why bother?

There's a lot of "amusing" stuff (if you are amused by fascists) on that website. They have an "FAQ" that includes the following question: "Why should libertarians support the Human Trafficking Prevention Act – doesn’t this act expand government and regulation?" Virtually everything they write is in the vein of "Arbeit Macht Frei" (aka "Welcome to Auschwitz") and ""War is Peace; Freedom is Slavery; Ignorance is Strength." Here is specific example: "“Freedom” is the presence of the “right restrictions,” the set of restrictions that objectively fits the givenness of our nature, the truth about “the way we are,” and the truth about “the way things are.”" [I did notice that they conspicuously left off the final phrase of that sentence: "as dictated by the Bible".]  I'm not making that up... I know, it seems like it must be a spoof right? A heavily sarcastic satire. But no, it's our Republican friends at their finest, issuing regulations for our own good, which is why so  many of them similarly advocate for "restrictions" of our Second Amendment rights in order for us to have "freedom" to NOT keep and bear arms. You can't make this shit up!

Taking away porn and forms of sexual release has no downsides
I think all those horny porn deprived individuals will direct their extra energy to gardening and helping those in need.  It should lower all rape and assault cause only non horny porn watchers do that.

I am slowly getting more jaded with many republicans and Trump who are failing to be conservative or follow the constitution.

But this is of course stupid. It will take about 24 hours before the whole world figures out how to bypass this porn filter.

I get that porn is a serious problem but this a stupid way to try and combat it. :FACE PALM:

But the Dems in Hawaii are asking and getting more than $20 because there are no Republicans to contest them.  :-\

And no, I'm not asserting anything at all.  ???
Do you read the stories you link to? Didn't you notice that the votes on some of those tax bills were "49-0, two excused"? That means that the REPUBLICANS in the House VOTED FOR THE NEW TAXES.

And of course there is an enormous difference between simply enacting taxes or increasing existing tax rates and violating the Constitutionally-guaranteed rights of free speech via government-mandated censorship, which is what the REPUBLICANS are seeking to do with their proposed legislation throughout the states.

And, as an aside, I just received an email from the head of Lone Star Gun Rights, one of the Texas organizations attempting to usher the "Constitutional Carry" bill through the Texas legislature this year:

"In a last ditch effort, House Republicans are exercising the nuclear option in an effort to kill Constitutional Carry!"

I can hardly wait to see the list of "excuses" offered up for this betrayal political position.

It has long been said that the Internet is basically paid for by the porn industry. It just follows that our politicians are walking around with their hands out looking for new ways to increase revenue in the name of lowering sex related crimes. I wish everyone would see that this is just a deflection.

Making porn more expensive will not stop those who want to watch porn from getting as much as they want. I had a friend many years ago that had hundreds of gigabytes (maybe a petabyte or two) of porn that was all the stuff people pay for and he got it for free. I think he had more hard drives in his computer room than Google does in their cloud.  :shake: :shake: :shake:  Most people don't realize it is so easy to get as much porn, music, videos and movies you want for like $10 or $15 per month. And the best thing about it is you can't get caught downloading it like you can from peer sharing sites. Your Internet provider might scream because you are using up bandwidth downloading all this crap. But who cares?

I wish everyone would place the blame for sex related crimes on the people who commit them and not on porn. It is not the porn industry that is the problem. It is not porn itself that is the problem. The problem is the people who commit the crimes that are the problem. If you get rid of porn altogether do you really think that those that commit sex crimes are going to stop?    If you make it more expensive to get paid for porn, do you honestly think the people who commit sex crimes are going to slow down committing those crimes? If anything, you get rid of porn or make it harder to get it will probably exasperate the sex crime problem.

I am not advocating for child porn, btw. That should remain illegal. And human trafficking should remain illegal. I am only advocating that pornography between willing adults should not be outlawed nor taxed any differently than any other business. It might be immoral to many of you. And you might not like the fact it is so readily available for free. But this is another issue to discuss in another thread.

I see the real problem here (besides the Republicans hypocrisy) as our inability to enforce the laws we have on the books. All the things that these bills are said to reduce, won't do a thing until we enforce the laws we have. If we put a greater emphasis on arresting and breaking up child porn rings and human trafficking rings there would be less of a tendency for people to engage in this behavior. Make it too difficult and they will find other things to do. JMHO

I hope people notice the virtuosity of Inspector's above post in that virtually the entirety of it could be re-written as follows (for this one single sentence example), and the same arguments hold in both cases:

"I wish everyone would place the blame for sex related crimes on the people who commit them and not on porn."

"I wish everyone would place the blame for gun related crimes on the people who commit them and not on guns."

Hey Dave, that was a masterpiece... I wanted to copy the whole thing and just make the substitutions of "guns" for "porn", etc., but figured people would get the idea from the one sentence example and could go back and read the original in that light. You DID intentionally write it as a commentary on the whole "guns cause crime, get rid of guns" thing, right?

Oh, and

DAMN!!! Porn's getting more expensive.  >:( >:( >:(
If they really kept the cost for removing the filter at "only" $20 for the lifetime of the device, that works out to only about how many cents per... oh, never mind...

Guess who was heavily invested in Betamax?  :shake: :shake: :shake:  One of my biggest errors in judgement. Another error in judgement was getting involved with the person mentioned below.

Actually, my girlfriend at the time (who used to work in the porn industry before I met her, a story for another time) had one of the original Sony Betamax machines. It was a terrific machine and was as heavy and big and mechanical as the old reel to reel audio tape recorders used to be. It even had a real wood cabinet if my memory is correct. Beta was superior to VHS in all ways except for the amount of porn you could record on one tape. Which is why VHS won out over Beta. I finally was forced to buy into VHS as my Beta machines became obsolete.

Not sure if porn was the reason BluRay won over HD-DVD. . .

Porn has driven the adoption of nearly every single technological advancement in audio-visual media.

PC hobbyists bought the first CD ROM drives to watch porn and play porno games (Strip Poker).

The Internet used to be a place to upload and download pictures, and later movies.  Streaming had not been thought of yet.

Even IRC (chat) was developed to give the gay community a tool for meeting other gays, talking dirty and exchanging pictures.  When webcams came along, the Internet became a "performance art" theater!

Technological advancement just gives people a new way to entertain themselves, and porn is at the top of that  list.
The reasonable man adapts himself to the world;
the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself.
Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man.
