What shape is the target?  A large deer with giant antlers?

He doesn't want to spend a lot of money
Maybe we can photoshop an ar500 gong on the frame

The wood would be relatively expensive but you would need some sort of metal chain material and certain linking hardware and that runs up the tab a little. No more than $20 in total parts for a basic set up. I could make one for you but I would have to add at least $30 for labor depending on what type you wanted.

There is an old saying that goes something like the cheap will become expensive. My group and I go through a lot of gongs every year. Not only are the AR500 plates expensive and crack easily but the frames take a beating as well. We use plumbing pipe, rebar and springs for our gongs. We use these items because they are cheap and stand up fairly well under the adverse conditions of being sprayed with lead and copper and being shot directly. Without the springs, we were replacing the pipes, rebar and plates much more often than we do now. They absorb the shock when the plate is hit. Our gongs get hit probably up to a 1,000 times a week.

Anyway, 2 pipes, 2 springs, 2 pieces of #3 rebar 4' long bent correctly and the pipes fit right into the pukas at the range. Field assembly and disassembly required. Takes less than a minute.
SCIENCE THAT CAN’T BE QUESTIONED IS PROPAGANDA!!!

Curious if there's a functional reason you left the chains so long?  I would have cut the chains to the length needed to reach the eye-bolts.

So it can flapp better. So the target hangs low it is also canted aft, if I shoot the chain I have more easily available. The with the longer length the height can be adjusted it also adds weight to the whole rig. Chain isn't the easiest thing to cut by yourself with bolt cutters.

Could be worst and when the chain was purchased, it was bought in 1 piece.  So the gong get one maile lei style chain.

As long as the extra chain is, you could almost use tent stakes to anchor them to the ground and avoid tipping it over with a misplaced shot.

My stand has authentic battle damage. The 8" is heavy enough to keep from swinging over and makes a satisfying gong sound. The 6" needs to be shorter to keep it in place. I'm using the C buckles now. The bolts tend to get messed up quickly.
