Seeking recommendations.
« on: April 28, 2017, 05:15:20 PM »
Hi. I own a 5.56 N4 19" barrel Noveske. But I have been fascinated in the .300 BLK for the heaviness alone. I've been meaning to look for a full upper receiver with bolt just to swap back and forth. Preferable under 400. Probably best if no longer or shorter than 16". Would anyone have suggestions of brand. Or possibly sell one in decent condition with a wee bit cheaper price. Much appreciated.

Better not be shorter than 16". The bolt action upper will be tough to find. Is there a reason why you're looking for bolt action?

Another important thing to look at is the gas length. Pisol length gas system seems to have the least problems cycling the action.

Thanks, hound.

And noted. Seems like almost all the upper I am seeing are pistol gas lengths.

I figured I separate my 5.56 Noveske barrel for target and fun practice and the the 300 for everything else with home defense and hunting(one day). Shorter barrel than my noveske would also be a nice touch for me due to my size.

I have read that the 300 is good for home defense. Especially when suppressed. Chee hoo!

It's too bad sound suppressors are illegal in Hawaii. My tinnitus is there as is but it would be nice to able to own one. Also courtesy to neighbors not to disturb them in case some crack heads decides to invade the wrong house. Lol.

Yes, we should be considerate gun owners and do our best not to disturb the neighbors with all those irritating gunshots.

So you're saying that you need a suppressor as a reasonable accommodation for your disability as required by the ADA? I like it.

Palmetto State Armory runs about the same.

No Noveske but around $400 complete.
There's really no reason why anyone with an AR-15 shouldn't get a 300BLK upper. The main question is if you could/should move your BCG between uppers. I was always told that's not a good idea, so I bought another BCG.

In terms of ballistics? If yes, what FPS loads are they talking about?

Or in terms of sounds/hearing considerations?

The reason why I asked was because I had this discussion with others, both shooting friends here and online, on ballistic pros and cons of 300 Blk. In terms of both defense and hunting.

Ballistics. As in terminal ballistics. Not what is possible in terms of different combinations of projectiles, powder, etc. I'm talking actually shooting of soft targets.

Reality is I don't want to get shot with any of these combo's and are all capable of stopping a threat.  Now if we want to get technical and perhaps the discussion of quicker incapacitation due to terminal ballistics or efficacy of the system, then for home defense .300blk really makes most sense in a suppressed SBR and less sense other than that.  Subsonic and suppressed and that is just a toy for shits and giggles.  Now if you can't run an SBR that is suppressed then there are probably better choices available for home defense especially when you might be considering reliability or a proven system of parts from possible questionable manufacturers.

If we can't get suppressors or SBRs and the cost of .300BLK ammo remains prohibitive, there is one reason.

7.62x39.

Drop on upper. They've pretty much got 'em worked out and reasonably reliable. Cheap ammo. Good for pig hunting. (And they can share ammo with that AK you got sitting in the corner)

Haha. You guys are great. I still do like the idea of .300BLK and for the its still a huge heavy debate between the 7.62x39.

But I'll have to determine which caliber will be the most versatile threat.

If I wasn't stingy right now, I'd drop all of the and go straight for the lapua.

The .300blk has its purpose.  It was designed to be shot out of a suppressed SBR.  Other applications, while outside of its main design concept will work, but the so called "juice" may not be worth the "squeeze".

Lapua?  That does not seem to fit into a "do all" including home defense category.  Not sure what you hunt and at what ranges, but that is overkill for most hunting applications in Hawaii.  Now if you do it "because you can" and don't mind the cost, then more power to you.  If your wanting to hunt anything that walks on 4 legs in the Americas, then have at it.

Last I heard, mag availability and feeding reliability were the issues regarding a 7.62x39 AR platform. As far as .300 BLK for home defense, the terminal ballistics are very good against a person, but 5.56/.223 is reported to be better when over-penetration of interior walls is a concern, due to the fact that the bullet will tumble and slow/stop much more quickly than most other rounds. Everything is a trade-off. What's the most important for your particular application? You live on a sizeable piece of acreage, or do you have neighbors and children nearby behind every wall?
