Saw the story on the news last night.
Pretty arrogant. Has wealthy foreign investors to support him.
Doesn't do much to help locals get affordable housing.

I say we let all the rich people build and buy as many expensive units as they want.  They will eventually have to come here and more rich people means more money we get from them.

I believe that any property in HI has to be owned by citizens and not foreigners.   Foreigners might be able to lease but not own.   Other than the BI none of the islands are growing.

In the late 80s the Japanese drove housing prices up.  Now it is the Chinese turn.  Next will be rich Koreans.  Don't want these guys buying on the BI and causing my property tax to go up. Mayor Kim already wants to raise it 6%.

I don't know what the demographics are on this island. In the multimillion dollar condo complex I am currently working on I see mostly Japanese and Chinese with some locals and a few haoles mixed in. On the Big Island the Chinese are buying up homes pretty quickly as are those from India and Japan. But the homes are much cheaper over there so I am sure the demographics are going to be different here as compared to over there.

The prices go up because of having more buyers than homes to supply them with. Typical supply and demand. Here are the official Oahu statistics:

On the Big Island the Chinese are buying up homes pretty quickly as are those from India and Japan. But the homes are much cheaper over there so I am sure the demographics are going to be different here as compared to over there.

My coworker is retiring soon and he just sold his old home in Kalihi to a Chinese guy. Pretty sure it was an investor because he did not bother to look at it very well.
He just wanted to close fast.

You younger folks should google Genshiro Kawamoto and the Japanese investors of that time period.

I know Kawamoto very well.  Worked for him for 5 years and have at least 400 hours of direct face to face contact with him.  He was nuts.  Had all these luxury homes in Kahala but never stayed in any of them.  He preferred staying in a $1500 a night suite at the Halekulani.

Heard one realtor saying that she has had inquiries from Koreans wanting to move since the NOKO thing is heating up.

The thing about this Johnson Fang guy wanting to sell mainly to Chinese, is that people from a communist country come here and don't like the freedoms we enjoy since they didn't have the same, then want to take the freedoms away.  Couldn't find the info, but I'm betting Johnson Fang is based out of Frisco.   We don't need this type here anyways.

Can't find it but I posted about a female Chinese immigrant (legal) who was born and raised in communist China (Mao this, Mao that) and was running for office in Colorado based upon how folks here have NO IDEA how fortunate they are and the freedoms allowed here in the US.
Her political poster showed her holding her AK, something that would have been a "terminal" offense in her homeland.
If you can find it and read her views, they are totally contrary to what you believe.

Sure there are immigrants from China and other countries who fled communist control and took to heart the freedoms of their new country the USA.  But I believe those who come here or buy property here for financial gains do not accept American freedoms so readily.   China is still their country.
The video I found is of a guy from China, now American, who shreds gun control at a public hearing.   But he was a asylum seeker to leave communism not like an investor.

My son and his wife both earn great incomes, but oh my goodness.... that's a lot.

And he lives in each condo four months out of each year. Do they have business here and use the condo as a place to live while they are here on business? Are they using the condo as a vacation home?

That kind of investing does nothing to help the local population. Is it any wonder why families are moving away from Hawaii?
Many of my nieces have moved. Many of my in-laws have moved. Another in law is in the process of moving.
Our 2A friend kimo 841gun just moved. My old co-worker moved years ago.

Now that I've added up all the losses, it kind of ticks me off.

A friend of mine is moving to Las Vegas at the end of the year to stay with her son due to the high cost of living in Hawaii. Her lease went up 8% last year and is going up again this year.
